Surface Defects - Cob Webbing

Collected my new black R a couple of weeks back to replace my GT. On collection it was hammering down so didnt couldn't see the paintwork. The car had only 250 miles on the clock so it shouldn't have been a problem. After seeing the car under bright lights now i have found most of the car is covered in very fine surface scratches which i had heard called cob / spider webbing. Dissapointed as I managed to avoid this on the previous roc. The defects are only visible close up and in certain light conditions but I know they are there now.

So some advice.

- Get it mopped by a pro?
- buy a DA polisher and do it myself?

Anyone done there own car with a DA polisher and got good results? I have heard the VAG clearcoat is roc hard.

You would be best to get a pro local to you to go over it with a rotary. It should not take too much, a finishing polish should remove the holograms for you.

Thanks for the advice, thought you might say that :-). I have looked at some of the pictures of the "hologram" defects, mine is very minor webbing nothing as bad as this. In the right hands can a rotary be fairly unobtrusive ? As I say the defects are very minor.

I had the same issue with the wife's new black Tiguan on delivery last year. I think it had been prepared in the ash cloud! I am sure I machined it with Megs 205 on a yellow 3M pad. That was all it needed. Hope you can get it sorted, I know how you feel, its very annoying. Whatever you do don't take it back to the dealer!

There's a risk in this reply that I'm going to sound like an expert ........ which I ain't

However, I do have a DA polisher and have had some good results from it. You're right in that apparently German bodywork finishes are very hard which means there's less of a risk of doing something horrible. I believe that rotary polishers are best left in the hands of experts whereas Dual Action polishers are less aggressive.

When it came to choosing pads and compounds it was a nightmare ...... way too much choice and too much conflicting advice. So I decided to go for using only Meguiars products and I've been really pleased with the results so far.

Thanks for the advice / offer but I am in staffs. I downloaded the Megs iPhone app a few weeks back and have watched the video guides and made a load of notes, my plan was to follow these and stick with Megs products. The least aggressive pads and compounds will be my starting point. Still mulling it over and looking for a good deal on a DA or possibly a kit tailored to new car.
