Poor fuel economy TSI 200ps

Post by harryc »

Having done a few motorway journeys in the rocco tsi 200ps im surprised that im struggling to top 30mpg even when cruising, highest it has been is 33mpg. It normally sits around 27mpg for a mixed town and motorway journey. Car was recently serviced by vw as well before i picked it up. Seemed to be getting better mileage from my old vr6 rado! Doing some searching it looks like my figures are a bit low, am i right? Any usual causes?

Via the mfa. I am comparing to others who read their mpg from the mfa too.

Do a brim to brim. I sometimes hava a rogue MFD reading (worst has been 4 mpg under), then other days its bob-on.

I've got a similar issue. If I drive like a granny the best i get is 33mpg, if i drive "normally" across a variety of road conditions i get around 27mpg. Both read of the MFD. As iv only had the car a month i thought it was normal to have fuel consumption this low. Is it?.

I have the 200PS model also, but my economy tends to be in the upper 30's most of the time as an average. On a motorway run, I am likely to end up with about 38mpg or even in the low 40's if being very light footed on an A road for example.

Unless you are caning it everywhere, it should be well into the mid 30's as an average I would suggest.

Haha not a chance - Filled up with v-power last week and shell fuel save regular unleaded this week..Its got a full VW service history and only 24k on clock. Next service is due in January, which will be the third stamp in the book. Tyre pressures are checked weekly. Bit worried now.

Does help if you stick to one grade of fuel, preferably the better grade and even same fuel company if you can. Otherwise the engine ECU is having to make adjustments which need to be trimmed out in the long term stored values. Doesn't have much impact on mpg but ......

I use Tesco Momentum and I usually get around 37MPG on my way to work (15 miles where the roads are all 50MPH+ and the m-way is usually around 60MPH due to traffic). Overall I'm averaging 30MPG, but that's due to short run to the train station, me driving a bit lively and traffic sometimes on the way to work, but always on the way back.

My hours are changing soon, so MPG should see a great increase without sitting in the traffic I always hit.

Averaging exactly 29.80 mpg here, measured by actual tank fill and mileage not the MFD. I find the MFD over-reads the mpg by approx 7% on average. That average is over 8000 miles since I bought the car (2nd hand with 12000 on it when I got it) and every tank quantity and mileage bunged in a spreadsheet. Btw, that's 20.02 pence per mile on fuel and an average of £5.97 per gallon (sad aren't I?).

A little less than I'd hoped for but some tanks have been in the 34-35mpg range in long journeys. I could probably up the overall average to about 32mpg but that's not why I bought a Scirocco!

Mixed with a higher % of ethanol since March 2010. Doesn't run well as Shell V power, BP Ultimate, Texaco 97RON.

Speaking of which I've noticed BP Ultimate isn't quite as good economy wise as VPower measured over 5 full tank fills.

I'd sat mid 20's isn't far off for only town driving stoping and starting if you car hasn't warmed up etc. Mine is usually about 28 combined with mostly town driving, but when I do take a longer run 32 is perfectly normal. Can get tiup to between 36 to 42 on the motorway but totally depends on the right foot. Being heaavier for even a bit can see it drop quite considerbly. Depending on your type of driving I don't think that is too unusual. That's. Me with only ever vpower too.

Averaged about 34 with my 2.0 Tsi 200 over 47k with really varied driving. R is currently sat just under the 30 mark, early days yet though. On long runs with the cruise on averaged 40 on a number of occasions.
