VW replacing my car as they can't fix, please help
Hi guys long story short, my tsi 122 (60 plate, 15,000 miles) had an engine problem so performance dropped and it made an awful sound on start up. After being at vw 6 times to get fixed they couldn't repair it or diagnose it so they have agreed to replace the car with a brand new factory order. (what is the lead times these days?)
I have the option of getting the 2.0tdi 140, is this the better option? What are the differences with the tsi122 and the tdi140?
Please help I have to decide sharpish!
Thank you all in advance.

Have you got any personal reservations about diesel engines? Some folk wouldn't consider it purely for that reason. Personally I'd go diesel where you'll have the MPG benefit but also the remap option which would take you up to 170ish BHP should you want a little extra.

Well I'm only 23 and having only driven petrol I don't know what the reservations over diesel are? What are the reasons?
Also a remap isn't of interest due to my age.
Thanks for your reply

Well some folk don't like the sound a diesel engine makes, also they don't rev as much but you do get more torque so it's a slightly different driving experience.
Could you not get a test drive in a 140 from the dealer before making your decision?

As Ian_Mac said above, I would recommend a test drive in a 140tdi so you can make your own mind up. However I think you will be pleasantly surprised with the diesels now a days, especially the VW common rail ones. At one point in my life I was a petrol only driver, but having converted a few years ago, there is no way I would go back to petrol again.
The 140tdi is also available in the GT spec, so that also might be something to consider. However, even if you don't get it in the GT spec, you also get a few extras on the 140tdi that you don't get on the 122tsi.

Thanks for the advice, I will give one a test drive first. as long as the tdi140 is no worse in performance than the tsi122 then I will be happy.
I think I will add the sterring wheel with the buttons, am I correct in thinking you get the highline with this, what does the highline have thats in addition to the standard?
Also, whats the lead time on the scirocco?
thanks all

you need the gt spec to have the highline computer & multifunction steering wheel. it gives you additional menus so that you can change certain bits & pieces yourself without needing vagcom.
as its a replacement car they may be able to accelerate the order for you so I doubt lead time will be relevant in this situation.

If you're not used to driving a diesel then I would definitely get an extended test drive, it's a completely different way of driving. You need to be keeping the turbo going when you want to accelerate or it'll feel like you've no power there.Driving a diesel is like driving a car with a split personality, it can be a sedate plodder or you can make some use of the turbo. It takes a bit of getting used to, knowing when to change up/down when acceleration to keep the engine revs in the sweet spot for the best acceleration. The diesel probably won't sound or feel as fast as it actually is. If you drive it right it will noticeably outperform the 122ps 1.4 in the mid-range, although it's not one for boy-racer traffic light duels.
You should get 50-55mpg around the doors and 60mpg on long motorway journeys. GT spec ups your equipment levels quite a bit.
Leadtime on a brand new order is about 12 weeks. You might be able to shorten that by getting one that's in the ordering system already if it hasn't been ordered for a specific customer (e.g. general dealership stock).

I ordered my 2.0 TDI 140 GT about two or three weeks ago. I was told to expect early 2012 delivery but have now had production week 40 (early Oct) confirmed. So not that long at all!

I think the GT 140 will more than out perform your old 122 petrol, especially so in the mid range. Like any new car you have to get used to the peculiar way it drives, as all cars, in my experience are different. Go for the GT spec you will get the active chassis control, better radio/cd and heating system and 18 inch alloys.

Re: VW replacing my car as they can't fix, please help
hi guys
thanks for all the help, ordered the car this morning, stuck with the 1.4tsi as i wouldve had to have paid 2500 towards the TDI.
Still, replacing a 1yr old car with 15,000 miles with a brand new one is pretty good going!
quick question, i got the MFSW added, which i never had on the original, and they are going to take my vw sat nav out my old car and put it in my new car, will they have to code the sat nav to the MFSW?
thanks all
