Engine Question about scirocco and TT

Post by Topper Harley »

im looking at buying either a 57 reg TT 2.0 TFSI or a 58 Scirocco GT 2.0 TSI
its so hard to find out the differences in engines as everything i read or hear contradicts the last thing i heard.

at this stage im fairly sure they are different engines both with 200bhp but the scirocco lower emissions so cheaper insurance.
im fairly sure the scirocco is chain driven and the TT belt.
and the compression ratio is lower in the scirocco.

the TT seems to suffer form high oil consumption (up to 1l per 1000miles) but not sure it this problem is the same with the scirocco.
if the scirocco doesn’t have this oil consumption problem it wont be a hard decision to make.

any info would be greatly appreciated so i can finally make a decision.

I know that both now come with the 210BHP engine that is suppose to be a lot better but that doesn’t fall into the budget so cant do much about that.

Thanks in advance

The 58 2.0 was the 200bhp model. Can't remember which year they started doing the 210 (I know my 2010 Model has it).

57 TT will have the older unit as found in mk5 Golf GTI not the newer engine as found in the roc

i dont know either! both are lovly, the scirocco has a better system and faster if i buy it over the slighter older tt
i want a Roc, but everyone keeps tellling me TT, if i had 20k to get the ideal tt then i would actully i would get the best roc, not the tt no the roc....

If it helps - I had exactly the same dilemma when buying my roc, my basis for going with the roc was; more space than TT (rear seat average sized adults won't be travelling far in the back of a TT), as mentioned, the engine is a newer unit in the roc, and after test driving both I found the roc TSI a more responsive and quieter drive (TT had noticeable lag and turbo noise) and for same money I got a better spec than the sparsely equipped TT.

I think you will find only the 210 engine has chain drive cams, which came in with MY 2010 .

Obviously the bestthing ton do is drive both and see if you can tell the difference. Also depends on what you will be using the car for. If you regularly carry 2 or more passengers then the Scirocco makes more sense. Personally I think the TT looks better, but I expect on the forum I will be in the minority. :)

i know both the TT and scirocco now come with the 210 bhp engine but i was just wondering if anyone knew if the older engine in the 58-59 reg scirocco and 56-59 reg TT were the same or different? My main reason for wanting to know is the TT seems to have quite a few problems regarding Oil consumption but ive not found anything about high oil consumption with the scirocco even though most people tell me its the same engine. im not sure how else i could find out its shocking how little the main dealers know about the cars they sell!

Here are the engine types I found by googling:

2.0 TFSI 147 kW: AXX/BGB/BPJ/BPY/BWA
2.0 TSI 147 kW: AXX/BWA/BPY/CAWB

and Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Vo ... ol_engines" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) gives:

-2006 Audi TT: AXX, BWA, BWE, BPY (North America)
-Audi TT: CCZA

If the engine types are CCZA and CAWB, I would expect some minor differences, but you'd probably have to ask both an Audi and a VW mechanic for the details. There's a lot of guesswork and pure nonsense regarding the TFSI vs TSI thing, so finding information online seems to be quite difficult.

i thought i answer that in my original post, just to make it clear, no they are not, early rocs used the 200ps version of the newer EA engine

Related to my earlier post: Both CCZA and CAWB are versions of the EA888 engine and the 2006 Audi TT engine is a version of the EA113 engine (if wiki has it right).

Sorry I know you did i was just unsure if you knew what you were talking about :D its really hard to figure out whos talking shit and who isnt. Now i know you know what your talking about

thanks to everyone who replied. seems most people on this forum knows what they are talking about, its a totally different story on the TT forum

so to sum up for anyone else wanting to know

the early mark II 2.0TFSI 200BHP TT use the EA113 engine then changed to the 210BHP EA888 engine
the early scirocco 2.0TSI 200BHP used an early version of the EA888 and now uses the 210BHP EA888 Engine

so i assume the earlier version of the EA888 is also chain driven, 9.3 compression ratio, lower emissions and better valve timing. please correct me if im wrong.

the EA113 has had lots of reports regarding high oil consumption has anyone experienced that in the scirocco or know if this is a problem as the engines are different but not by much?

i ran an A3 with the EA113 before i got the rocco and in reality I never found it had a massive thirst for oil and in the same region as the roc, rocco has been really good on oil with the odd top but never more than a litre between longlife services

yes the early rocs are chain driven as thats the main difference with the EA888 also this engine runs a IHI turbo rather than a K03, it has lower emissions as my car tax went down (however the 210 i believe is even less) and has been more frugal

If you really want to cause chaos on the TT forum ask if the current engine has valvelift... :D

The EA113 and EA888 engines really are completely different lumps that just happen to have the same cubic capacity.

Personally I haven't had to put any top up oil in four odd years and 70k miles of owning EA113 engined cars, run 'em properly I say and you'll get a hard engine.

On EA113 engines in addition to oil consumption watch out for the High pressure fuel system issues, coking and cam follower/lobe wear, all are known issues affecting various production years. Cam follower premature wear had been sorted by MY08 so shouldn't be issue.
However on a 57 plate a EA113 engine car may need the timing belt replacing depending on what's printed in the manual. This may need doing it at: 60k miles or 4 years, 90k miles or 5 years, 115k miles or 5 years.. VW/Audi have changed the interval guidance over years seemingly randomly. Budget between £400 and £500 for this if it's needed.

I have had a TT in the past and have a scirocco at the moment. Overall I think the scirocco is a better package.

Next stop 135i which to be honest is a much better car for the money.

well from what i have learnt i think i will be going for the scirocco. Just need to find out if they have any common problems. Nothing seems to stand out when i search for problems except for minor things like windscreen wipers, boot squeek or windows sticking when its frozen over. do any of you know of any common problem to look out for? thanks again
