sports exhaust

Post by viperoc »

Hi All,

This may have been covered already but I couldnt find it on searching: is there a recommended sports exhaust that improves the sound of the petrol 1.4 Tsi engine? It sound great already but wanted to know how I could enhance it. Not a boy racer noise but a more cultured, bass-ey purr... Im not an expert on the technicalities but is it just a back box I need? Anyone done this already?

Cheers! :)

Ive managed to obtain a ABT quad oulet back box for a MK5 golf, I had to open up the bend a little with a little heat and cut an exact match for the other side, but other than that it sounds fantastic, improves mid range torque and has a very slight pop when you change gear quickly.
Exhaust only cost £100

hi again, how are you finding your little 1.4 160? Im getting a little worried with some of the stories about the engines being weak, mine is an ex-demo (4k miles) when i got it, its already had a new clutch, broken exhaust flexy, pass window, ecu update, wiper stalk, tailgate rattle and has still got a slight juddery clutch and a faint grating when pulling through the gears from the gearbox( dealer says normal) strange tho all my other cars have never had a noise like this.
Im considering a tdi170!

have you had any issues with yours?

Must have had a hard life as a demo car to get some of those problems. :eyepop:

Your right RW1 and its taken the shine of a beautiful looking car, I really need to test drive another 1.4 160 to listen out for this gearbox noise, is there anyone around the northwest / warrington /chester that has one just to sit in the passenger seat and check it out.

Hi motorsportmatt

My 160 is as solid and pleasing as the day I got it- actually no, its better! Its really become very nippy since I passed the 10k miles point and there are certainly no mechanical issues. I reckon you have had a one off Friday car and the diesel roc drivers are spreading the muck on the lovely 160! Sorry to hear of your woes still... :(

Any cat back exhaust should do the trick.

Milltek offers both resonated and non-resonated versions: http://www.millteksport.com/exhaust.pro ... iantid=312" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Simons offers both two and four pipe versions: http://www.simons.se/Katalog/VW/VW_Scir ... xhaust.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

MTM offers also both two and four pipe versions: http://www.mtm-online.de/en/VW/Scirocco ... CIROCCO118" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

ABT offers a rea skirt + 4-pipe exhaust set: http://www.abt-sportsline.de/en/tuning/ ... et-2976-1/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You can probably find others as well. Milltek is quite popular (AFAIK), but I opted for the slightly cheaper Simons for my 122 PS Scirocco. I'm still waiting on delivery so I can't say what kind of difference it makes. You could try and find something on youtube. Just search with the words "scirocco cat back" and see what comes up.

No prob. I hope you get the exhaust note you were looking for. =) If you're planning on tuning the car more in the future, then it might also be worth your while to consider turbo-back exhausts as well, but these will cause more legality issues and you'll probably have to do something about the lambda probe as well.

For just a nicer noise you could also consider a back box only exhaust custom made for you to the sound you want. It's what I've got and I'm quite happy with it!
