Fan over run on switch off

Post by gibbsy »

We I got home today I switched the engine off but the fan kept on running. This went on for well over a minute so I started up the engine again and let it run a bit then switched off and all was well. Looking in the handbook it says to let the engine idle in neutral for about 2 minutes after a hard drive. The drive was 70mph+ on the motorway then 60mph+ on a dual carriageway. Ten miles from home traffic at a crawl because of a breakdown and recovery, mostly 1st and 2nd gear, for about 10 minutes. Back up to 70 once it was clear. Was that hard driving or is just because the engine has just 1500 miles on the clock. Oil temp was 101 and water normal.

Sounds like it just got a bit warm whilst doing the crawling, nothing to worry about IMO.

And don't forget, there will be extra heat generated due to the running in period before it settles down.

I did wonder that as the smell was 'new and hot'. Doing 70+ on the M4 the trip was showing 54.2 mpg...........brilliant.

Looks like it was DPF regeneration that was taking place as that is the symptoms you get when this takes place.

DPF regen info :) . I wouldnt worry about it to much, although I know I did when the fan was still running 10 mins later but its normal.

Thanks digiman and gazman. Completely different PDF system from my old Volvo which only regenerated when the car was actually running. Not happened since although I've been on long runs.
