Re: Rust ! ! !
Hi
My car also goes in tomorrow (Monday the 18th)
If your problem was not picked up whilst in for its service – then how did you discover it ? (just by looking perhaps as I did ?)
Now that VW have been informed of the problem they may ask dealers to check during service intervals – but if two cars have an identical problem (bearing in mind the two cars appear to have been manufactured within a similar time to each other ) – then it may indicate that others being treated to the Zinc dip may develop the same problem.
Nevertheless, between us no doubt we can update the Forum.

I'd agree with this. They need to be looking at a source, ie. water ingress/leak from rear washer pipework.Shaun wrote:I am not sure thats whats actually wrong with it but at least its being done.

Re: Rust ! ! !
Noticed mine purely by chance, loading stuff in the boot and saw it from the corner of my eye. Paint guy at VW measured it and photographed it and it was collected today by Scratch Match. Should have it back by Wednesday afternoon, so without mine for 2 1/2days. I'll post the results/findings on here.

Re: Rust ! ! !
Got my car back today and body shop unable to explain why I had any corrosion. Suggested it could be the shape of the tailgate and water sittin on a level part???? Anyway, it's all corrosion free now, reprimed and painted and looks like new so am happy. Promised to keep an eye on it an report back if it happens again.

Re: Rust ! ! !
Car returned this-morning.
Very impressive paint job – well matched to the extent that it is simply not noticeable (which is the way it should be.)
Apparently, the ‘problem’ was also causing blistering to the outside of the boot door – but only visible at certain angles – but no doubt would have worsened in time.
Must congratulate the garage: Pulman Volkswagen of Durham (although they farm out their bodywork problems)
Nevertheless – my car cleaned inside and out.
Courtesy car: New Jetta.
Great service and nice to know that I have found a good garage - at last.
Nice to have my car back.

Re: Rust ! ! !
As a footnote to my last post – I forgot to mention that the blistering on the OUTSIDE of the boot – was in fact half way up the door.
This would suggest that the problem was NOT to do with water forming some form of puddle etc – as half way up the boot door there is nowhere for the water to rest. ! ! !

Re: Rust ! ! !
Well, the repair/re-spray/whatever did not work AT ALL !
Same problem has returned – and is now worse than before. (and covers a much larger area)
Took it to the dealers to-day and awaiting their comment.
Not happy !

Re: Rust ! ! !
Lewis - I think you need a new tailgate, once rust starts it's very hard to remedy, especially if the source of the problem is internally on the panel which the bodyshop can't get to. You only get 3 years for an issue like this whilst it remains "cosmetic". You'd have to wait for it to rust through to claim on the 12 year anti-perforation warranty and even then if you were aware of it deteriorating (as it is) beyond 3 years and did nnothing to remedy the process yourself they'd probably weasel out of it by saying you should've done more to maintain it.
I wonder whether your car was damaged pre-delivery and you got a replacement tailgate fitted at the factory that didn't go through the hot zinc dip before it was painted up? The replacement body panels for all manufacturing damaged cars are sent through the paint shop on frames, rather than on a whole car, maybe in that instance they skip the hot dip process but they apply more cavity wax etc to compensate?
I wonder whether some colours are more susceptible to this issue than others (if nothing atypical happened in the construction of your car)

Perhaps you are right – but my main priority is to have the issue committed and detailed in writing.
When the car was supposedly ‘repaired’ no paper-work was given – although I accept that there is no doubt a record of the repair on VW’s computer, which I consider inadequate.
The dealer rang to-day but I was unable to take the call – nevertheless I will ask (in writing) just what the ‘new’ repair will consist of and how it will differ from the last ‘repair. Any reply or further comment will be requested IN WRITING.
Updates will be posted – particularly as other cars may suffer the same problem.

Re: Rust ! ! !
Did you get any further than this? I'm having to go through this myself now. Corrosion evident in same places. It has not yet broken through tho.
