Rust ! ! !

Post by lewis »

Please note:

my car will be two years old come July – so those of you with cars of a similar age - take a look NOW !

Open the boot door and whilst it is fully open there is a hand recess at the top for the closure – immediately above there are three ‘studs’(can’t think of any other way to describe them) – ? – one to the left of the recess – one to the right and one directly above.

The one(s) on the left and right on mine have the beginnings of rust AND flaky paint !

I can only assume that there may be a problem with water ingress into the boot door due to a poor seal on the rear car window.

Anyone else with such a problem ?

Yes will of course get it seen to come the two year service in July

Pictures of the exact location ?, do you mean the drainage holes which have plastic plugs in them (usually painted over)?

Ah yes could be...will take photo in next 24hrs and upload

Why would there be a need for drainage holes ? That would mean that water has gained entry !

VW seem to put holes there and then plug them with plastic covers, they then paint them ??!, not sure why they are there perhaps something to do with the production process ?!!, they did the same with the golf and when i fitted the reverse camera in the golf i opened the holes up as there was dampness in that area.

Its in some cases to apply wax sealant as part of the rust proofing after the paint dipping before final top coat has been completed. The cap keeps the wax in so as the outer surface is not contaminated before the top colour paint are sprayed on.

In other cases such as where the rear axle mounts forward of the rear wheels, its where the lifting cradle in early production is attached until the wheels were fitted.

Those faint rust marks suggest more than just some moisture condensating in the lower tailgate area.

I wonder if ....

1) the plumbing for the rear washer jet is weeping inside the bodywork?
or
2) the rubber grommet that sits in the rear glass which the rear wiper drive spindle passes through is leaking?
or
3) the tailgate glass bonding is not fully sealed along the bottom edge where water gathers in the litlle gutter that spans the whole lower glass edge?

I'm inclined to think the wiper grommet seal or the rear glass bonding may be the source.

The washer jet plumbing is more inboard and you should have seen water coming out of the plastic rear trim panel.

Dealers I think.

Yes it really is quite bad that, must be something wrong somewhere, the tailgate doesnt have any drainage points so any water that gets in there stays in there !!, i am tempted to take my trim off and have a look, and maybe pop one of the plugs out !.

Shaun; Its under warranty, they might falsely accuse you of causing this if they know you've been in there for a look around. Just take it to the dealer.

I am not taking mine anywhere LOL, its not me that has the issue its lewis thats got a problem, mine are perfectly fine , i am just curious as to whats behind there and i dont want mine doing that, besides they cant refuse a warranty claim if you have had the trim off, i am also 99.9% sure they would have no idea i had been in either.

RUST - PART TWO

Post by lewis »

RUST – Part Two

Took car in for service and showed the paint technician the problem.

Knew straight away what the problem was (we were all wrong with our ideas, nothing to do with water getting into the boot door)

Problem diagnosed as a reaction from the zinc dip !

As he identified the problem without hesitation – I asked if he had seen it before – Oh yes he replied So forum readers…keep an eye on yours.

Strange thing is they want the car for seven to ten days ! which seems a long time.

Courtesy car to be provided.

Will keep you all updated. (message for Peter from Hexham … I live nearby …but its not going in there)

My car is 2 years old in September and has exactly the same problem. It's been collected tomorrow by some bodyshop who think they'll need it for a minimum of 2-3 days to get to the cause and rectify it. Gonna be stuck driving a VW Fox for the next few days.

It's just been in for it's first service and was never picked up on by the VW dealer - or if they did pick up on it they chose to ignore it.
