the dealdrivers site looks like you need to send an order or 'ask a question' to get the conversation going. as maisbitt says broker type sites can be quite handy, I bought my roc through broadspeed but also looked at orangewheels

GeoffTT - could you give me a little info on how you ordered your car through dealdrivers - website looks a little confussing how i would go about it.

I had a spreadsheet of exactly what model I wanted together with options and 2 columns for VW list price and dealdrivers price as shown on their website, so I knew exactly what the total should be and the saving over list. I then filled in the form online, gave them the details and they rang me back. I had a couple of questions regarding delivery options, and they got back to me very quickly with the answer and confirmation of the price which was exactly the same as my total. When I said I was happy and wanted to go ahead, they then passed all of the details to their VW dealer (in my case Alan Day VW in London) who rang me later the same day, confirmed all details and took a deposit via card. Following that, I was sent a confimation of the order via email. I did email them after a few weeks and they gave me the confirmed build week number, so I knew when it should ship from the info on here. The next contact was when the car was with them.They called and arranged the exact delivery date and I paid the final balance and got insurance sorted so they could tax it. I used the VW free 7 day cover as they will send a copy of the cover note direct to any VW dealer for just this purpose. I then arranged my own insurance to start on the day of delivery. They then drove it from London direct to my door (in Devon and at no extra cost). It really was as easy as it could be - decide what you want, pay for it, and have it delivered to your door. No need to drink any foul dealer coffee and be smarmed over and bull****ed by a salesman, and save about £2000

New or used? One factor is how you're going to finance it - if buying outright then you may consider the saving worthwhile - if you're financing it then different criteria come into play. For me a new one was the only option for me as a used one would be way past my monthly budget.

All those chaps trying to sound clever about VAT are very mistaken.

The dealer/customer pays full VAT upon the the purchase of a brand new car, from then on all cars are charged at what is called marginal tax i.e the dealer will only pay tax on the profit margin, don't let them try fiddle you. The dealer may offer you £4000 for your cary put on his forecourt for £4750 and will onlt pay tax upon the £750. (Not sure if its 20% might be a bit lower not sure)

There you go, a bit of a lesson on taxation for you all.

hi from a newbie first time owner that has just gone through the new/ lightly used dilemma

I agree with earlier post that suggested that 1yr old is better if you want loads of extras. Just bought a 2010 CW 2.0Tsi with sun roof,Leather,winter pack, sat nav, Pdc,folding mirrors- for under £20k from a main dealer. suspect list new would have been around £29k. So even with a discount thats probably around 25% depreciation in year 1 & its the xtras that contribute a big chunk of that, I reckon.
