Latest update: BRAKES!

After much umming and arhhhhing about what brakes to go for, a set of Mintex 1144s were fitted in March. 1 track day and 2 months later, they have been removed from the car.

The low speed brake squeal was just too annoying and they were making some dodgy grumbling noises also. Thinking the discs might have had it also, a new set of discs and OE Pagid pads were fitted this morning.

Finally its back to normal with no squeal. The Mintex pads however were not looking good and the pad material was starting to crack and potentially break away from the backing plate.

Being an accountant I was doing some calcs and figured for 1 set of fancy VWR 6 pots I could buy 10 sets of OE discs and pads!!! That's not even taking into consideration replacement discs and pads for the VWR set up.

Ok braking performance is not as good but the car is 90% road car so will just have to accept on track days the brakes won't last but at least it won't cost me arm and leg to replace them and they don't give the dreaded squeal.

I agree, if the car is for road and not track and you don't drive like a madman, OEM R brakes are fine. if you do lots of track days etc and hard late braking on the roads then maybe investigate, but for 'normal' people, i think they fine. theyre better than the ED30 brakes were people mod to 320BHP using them, so im sure we're good to go as we are!

i did the R32/S3 upgrade on my GTI and it was the biz for only £500!

but yeah in reality the OEM R set up is fine for the road even in 320bhp tune as it currently is.

Clutch seems to be holding up well tho despite experiencing a bit of slip previously. It definitely didn't like it when i changed the Timing settings on the Revo. So it's back on the conservative settings and it's been fine.

Just been quoted £1200 for clutch upgrade so will try and leave it on Stage 1 tune now I think.

Looks good.

The squeal is pretty bad with 1144's. Strangely since my last track day they barely make any noise compared to before - good or bad sign I dont know. The very last bit of braking at low speed, they sound like they are grating, you can see it on the discs too. Along with if you brake with wheel turned on the roads. Granted they are a vast improvement on track, but I'll try something different after next track day I think (DS2500s maybe).

Hows the Twintake shaping up Lee? Thinking about getting one off a guy on the GTi forum but can't get a definitive answer to the 'how noisy is it really' question, don't really want it to drive Emma mad on the daily commute!

I love it mate! You should have said at Inters would have let you have a go in mine to hear it.

It does make the darth vadar sucky noise, wouldn't say it's that intrusive but definitely audible but the bit I like is when u change gear with it boosted up makes that rally car noise (people call it waste gate chatter but really it's the pressurised air slamming into the turbo inducer turbine blades due to closed throttle)

Oh if u r thinking of getting Ross 46s one be aware he has the old K03 version without the take off for the remote DV. Don't know if Forge will just sell u the new universal pipe with take off for K04 cars

It's Flyboys's K04 version i'm thinking about, i'm sure i'll love it but it might get a bit tiresome for Emma round Tesco carpark lol
