Strange rear tyre wear?..
Hi all, had my Rocco about 10 months (58 plate) No clue as to it's tyre history, but when I got it the rears looked almost new and the fronts had a decent amount of meat on them.
The fronts now are due for replacing, but the rears have worn more on the inside than outer to the tune of 4mm inside / 6mm outer. Anyone seen or heard of this? Or maybe it's normal?
I check pressures weekly but any error wouldn't cause them to wear like this methinks. If it makes any odds, I do a lot of motorway, and A road miles, usually with ACC on comfort to soak up the jiggles.
Cheers.

Is it the same on both sides? inside worn more than outside?
Have the fronts worn evenly?

Re: Strange rear tyre wear?..
so slightly negative camber on the rear wheels then...
Personally I have no idea if this is as it should be or if its adjustable on a Scrirocco. Sorry (I don't even have a scirocco...yet)
Most likely help handling though

Re: Strange rear tyre wear?..
My wife is a driving instructor and a few years ago we bough a new Nissan Note. When we got to the first tyre change (front wheels) i also had a look at the rears and noticed that the inside of the rear tyres was worn 2mm more than the outers. This type of wear normally indicates a tracking issue so returned the car to Nissan who were pretty pathetic and told my wife it was due to driving round too many roundabouts as a driving instructor. To cut a very long story short I contacted a comapny by the name of Wheels in Motion who specialise in wheel allignment issues. I rang the company for advice and they recommended me a company near to where I live that checked the alignment for me and discovered that the rear beam axle was actually out of alignmnent. I went back to Nissan armed with an engineers report and they were then forced to fix it. Link for wheels in motion is http://www.wheels-inmotion.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;sugar_W wrote:Hi all, had my Rocco about 10 months (58 plate) No clue as to it's tyre history, but when I got it the rears looked almost new and the fronts had a decent amount of meat on them.

In the first instance though I'd take the car back to VW and ask them to check the rear wheel alignment (it needs doing properly and ideally on something like a Hunter system). If they tell you there's nothing wrong ring Wheels in Motion and ask their advice. If you tell them you found them through the MX5 forum that will also help.
The problems will start if there is an alignment issue and will depend on whether the rear wheels are adjustable or not but you can cross that bridge when you get to it.
You could also get yourself a user name and post the issue on the forum. The guy that runs the company (Tony) normally responds personally. http://www.wheels-inmotion.co.uk/forum/ ... owforum=50" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Good Luck

Re: Strange rear tyre wear?..
The toe and camber can be adjusted on the Scirocco rear axle. It may be the adjusters were not tightened enough at the factory.

I've got the same problem on mine. Have had to have the rear alignment adjusted but I didn't realise until the tyres started rumbling and now the car is noiser than it should be.

Did you get the dealer to sort it? Was it out by much?... Mine is due back in the dealers for some warranty bits, will sound them out about it but not holding much hope they will give a toss tbh.danmachin wrote:I've got the same problem on mine. Regardless, thanks for the info gents. Been doing some digging, seems that EOS owners are suffering the same problem, may/may not be related but I think I'm right in saying the underpinnings are the same on the Roc. Probably an unfair comparison due to the 1000 weight of roof gubbins on the EOS though.

Re: Strange rear tyre wear?..
I think it was out quite a bit - difficult to tell though as I am no expert. The dealer identified it and said they would fix it for me for about £60. If I wanted the noise to go away then I needed two new tyres as well but they have a lot of tread left on them so they said I could leave it for a while if I was happy to put up with the noise.
Went to my usual tyre fitter for a second opinion and they agreed, saying it was a common problem on VWs and Audis. They hadn't got the equipment to fix it though. I eventually took it to another tyre fitter who have done some alignment work for me in the past and they repaired it for £30.

unusual rear tyre wear
Hello everyone.
Got a bit of a strange one for you all.
Ive had my Scirocco for a couple of months now ( approved used VW ) and noticed last week a sound that seemed to sound like a worn wheel bearing.
On closer inspection I have found that the rear tyres have worn on the insides, with the off side tyre being a lot worse.
Ive just popped into my local VW dealer to be fobbed off that it is a common fault with the Scirocco .
I argued the point that surely the cars geometry must be out and there answer was " no it's the way the rear suspention has been built " and then told to try differant tyres as this will solve the problem!!!!!!!!!!
The tyres are Dunlop sports on the back and have only done 3,000 miles as I made them replace them when we bought the car and the car is a 2.0 tsi GT on a 58 plate.
Are they talking crap or is the true.
I had a mk5 GTI with no trouble with tyres and as the chassis on the Scirocco is the same, im sure they are just fobbing me off.
It would be great if you guys have heard of this before.
Thanks

Re: Strange rear tyre wear?..
I had this problem on my last car (Audi A3) inner edges of both rears were down to legal limit in just under 3 years. I never really carried excessive weight in the boot or carried rear passengers regularly.
The guy at the garage that refused to give it an MOT certificate because of the tyres said he had seen this loads on V.A.G fwd cars and in his opinion it was because the suspension was set up while the car was off the ground and so didn't account for the sprung weight of the car on the production line. I thought it was probably BS but it sounded plausible.
When I took it for a pair of rear tyres (that was not affiliated in any way to the MOT station) the tyre fitter said exactly the same thing and showed me the difference on the rear tracking when the weight of the car was included. He re tracked the rear for free for me and said that when I got my Scirocco to bring that in straight away for them to check and adjust if needed. I did but there was no problem with the Scirocco though and my car will be three years old in October and the rears are like new. They still have just under 6mm after 25K miles.
I just changed my fronts last weekend though. I don't always drive it like I stole it but I don't drive like a Reginald either.
25K out of a pair of Pirelli P Zero Rosso's was certainly a pleasant surprise

Re: Strange rear tyre wear?..
If they forgot to tighten or not tighten enough, the camber nuts (80Nm) or the toe nuts (95Nm) at the factory, then the eccentric adjuster bolts on either rear axle side will find a new position over time.

Can't wait to quote that to the nice service desk lady... I lost the will to live when she advised 'the car had to be connected to head office in Germany to update the sat nav firmware, and could take up to 8 hours'RW1 wrote:If they forgot to tighten or not tighten enough, the camber nuts (80Nm) or the toe nuts (95Nm) at the factory, then the eccentric adjuster bolts on either rear axle side will find a new position over time.

Incidentally when I was hunting round for info I came across this from whatcar:
http://www.whatcar.com/car-news/our-car ... t-2/250026" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I'm not 100% which platform the Roc is shared with so may not be related being a mk6.

just checked mine and at 25000 miles rear are evenly worn with about 5mm on them
the MK1 TT wore rear types in that way, but they have the rear wheels visibly tilted inwards at the top......

Re: Strange rear tyre wear?..
Reading about the wheel bearing theory reminds me of another motoring tale of woe that caused me severe torsion of the testes and time wasted that I will never get back. "Thank you Vauxhall"
Way back in 1993 I bought my first brand new car. A Vauxhall Calibra ! After about 12 months of ownership I noticed what sounded like a droning noise from what I thought was the rear end. Vauxhall's team of "experts " had several goes at fixing it including changing the gearbox, two sets of rear wheel bearings after deciding the first set were faulty and ripping out most of the interior and positiong a small boy in the boot with a stethoscope ( I kid you not !! ) whilst a large fore headed ape with knuckles down to his ankles bleached off on a spirited test drive round the block to try and replicate said noise but alas to no avail. After 8 wasted prolonged visits and several shitty loan cars later the spotty YTS lad (ask your elders) made his diagnosis. It was the tyres. His remedy was to swap the tyres over on the back and make them run the other way. (Directional tyres were not commonplace then) so the offending Nippon Nevergrips were swapped around and to my amazement solved the problem.
So to conclude. If changing the tyres solves the problem I would grab it thankfully with both hands and rejoice in the fact that however bad it might seem it can' t be as bad as my experience at the hands of my local Vauxhall centre of excellence back in the early Nineties !!

Re: Strange rear tyre wear?..
Thanks people.
Just an update.
I took my car to QST ( VAG tuning for MTM )in my home town.
Ive used then for around 8 years now ( all my Golfs have been maintained by them and tuned ) and they have never given me the B.S.
As soon as Kim Collins ( owner ) looked at the tyres he told me the geo was out and VW were talking out there back sides.
He put the car on the four wheel laser aiignment and found both out ( fronts spot on )
I told him to go ahead and adjust them and to give me a report on what he had found.
The tyres have now had it so they will have to be replaced.
I have Emailed Brighton VW on Tuesday with the findings and suprise suprise, no reply as of yet.
I will keep you all updated.
Cheers
