MPG 1.4TSi

I have ordered a 1.4TSi and I was just wondering what MPG people are getting. I was hearing about 30-40MPG, I would like to know what else people have seen.

highest i've had so far is 45mpg cruising back from west london (i'm in norfolk) that was speed ranging from 60-a tad (ahem ) over 70. day to day on my commute (15 minutes ish on 40mph & 70mph roads mainly) i'm getting 28-35 depending on mood & conditions, heading into town & crawling like a snail is obviously lower

General knocking about in smooth running 20 - 30 mph urban traffic and some motorway, averaging 35 - 36 mpg.

Motorway only, MFD reading about 38mpg but I have a cooling problem which may be making the engine run cool and therefore richer fuelling at the moment.

Yeah I thought I would get about 30-35mpg on the motorway. I will try and not get 20mpg lol, but im sure that when I get it I will have to get a feel of the whole range of fuel consumption haha.

Well i've had my car just one day and the avergae MPG is already 41 MPG...although thats mainly motorway driving between 60-80 mph...pretty impressed given that its only done 200 miles!

Got mine this week, only getting 29 mpg at the moment. I dont seem to be able to drive slow anywhere, got to say the DSG is superb.

Definately got better mpg from mine when it was new.
However it was summer then and I was carefully running it in and we did have lots of nice runs out in the new Roc.
Now its cold, dark winter and I'm driving it like it should be driven and I'm mainly just doing the daily crawl in to work

My average is around 34-38mpg (which I may add is some way short of VW's estimate of 44.8mpg). However, on long motorway runs you can get 40mpg if you don't go over 75mph and are gental on the throttle.

Put cruise control on at 50 and you can get 60mpg!!!!

Hey All.

I did a quick search, but couldn't find much about this.... (Perhaps I wasn't using the right words though!).

For members with the TSI 160, roughly how many miles do you get out of a tank of fuel? I appreciate that it will vary depending on the style of driving, motorway or town etc... But a rough figure would be great :-)

I'm looking forward to picking mine up shortly, anything has got to be more economical than my old rx-8 mind!

I was getting about 420 out of a tank but with the price of fuel ever increasing I've been altering my driving style abit & now getting closer to 515miles. not loads of fun but needs must on occasion & that's with trip mph running consistently between 40 & 44 (before it was about 32-35 generally) so still room for abit of improvement perhaps.

I get about 400 to a tank but majority of that is round town. Re-map etc seems to have made luttle difference (possibly even made it better)

I filled up with Shell V Power yesterday, 51.13 litres @ £72.55 (Red area start point to full)

9,365 miles to date.
Average mpg from new: 34.65
Average of last 10 tanks fulls: 34.34
Highest mpg: 42.31 Lowest mpg: 27.89
Urban driving 95% of the time. (Dash average per trip: 18 - 20mph.)

To be fair the highest/lowest mpg readings were still while the engine was bedding in at 3,000 - 4,000 miles. Since then urban low mpg has improved to a lowest of 31.31 mpg. Still to do a long run that is specifically measured since the 6,000 mile mark.

A large change behind the improvement was to shorten the plug gap to the correct gaps. The spark plugs ain't set at the factory/suppliers to the correct gap of 0.8mm to 0.9mm. Even a set of spare spark plugs I have came with wildly different and over gapped settings.

I set the spark plugs to 0.79mm and the engine is a lot smoother and quieter. But the main impact was on the way the DSG operated & chooses its gears. The DSG will now hold gears better for constant throttle settings. eg. On a long climbing brow to home, as it started the climb up (not steep), it would be in 5th at 30 - 33mph but immediately the DSG selected 4th with the consequent increase in engine rpm. Post the plug gap being set to 0.79mm, the DSG now remains in 5th gear all the way up the 3/4 mile stretch without any problem. I presume this is because the torque sensor readings are much smoother, so not triggering the DSG ECU controller to change to compensate.

ETA: Set the plug gap shorter in Sept'2011 to 0.74mm (29thou) with even better results... see effects listed here.

(NB: You have to be very careful re-gapping fine wire spark plugs that have very small diameter platinum or iridium alloy electrodes. Feeler gauges or wire gauges should be used with gentle care when testing the gap by comparing with the feeler gauge. Otherwise the central electrode tip will be damaged.).

So presumably this DSG gear change/lower engine rpm characteristic generally is why the minimum mpg has improved, beside further running in occurring. I see also better motorway cruising dash mpg figures but as said, have not yet measured specifically tank brim to brim filling.

I've a 1.4. 160bhp with 14k+ on the clock.
Mainly round town driving I'm getting 28-31 mpg.
Tried some careful motorway driving today - 60 to 70 mph - and after resetting the MFD once it was warmed up I found I was getting an easy 45 mpg and for a while was getting 49.6 mpg.
I use Shell V power.

mine is more or less like every ones elses's stats. when not in a hurry, just about 60-70mph on the m6 goes the best average read out.

To fill my tank up full ( normal unleaded) is around 65,00 GBP, usually lasts about 2-3 weeks.

If I put the settings to Sport and use the paddleshift ( especially at weekends) then i could lose about 20GBP worth of fuel in a very short space of time.

It's because the engine gets warmer a lot quicker than in the colder months so improving fuel consumption

Well I thought about that before but after noticing the effect during previous season changes I'm not so sure its just down to that. The change seemed to be quite sudden rater than a gradual improvement in fuel econony.
I seem to recall reading about winter and summer fuels and I wonder whether that still appliees and might be behind the change.
Its only since i've had my Roc which shows me the mpg I'm getting that I've been able to gauge this.

I'm looking forward to the cold, dense air and the benefits it offers turbo's... but for now the warm weather will be just fine!

To continue the slight tangents on this thread.... has anyone noticed any significant difference with different fuel types?

My Elise ran better (and got better MPG) on V-Power, whereas the Avensis seems better on Ultimate Diesel for the same reasons.... I know many folk don't claim to see any difference but I certainly did.
