Behind Glove Box Vibration Noise...

Post by yellowplum »

Has anyone experiences a noise coming from the rear of the glove box. It seems to be a long vibrating noise and only happens at low revs in gears 1-3. The dealer noticed it also and said he was going to look at it when he had the car in to deal with the failing steering column but missed that one off the list. Anyway haven't taken it back yet as it is due a service in 400 miles so will have it sorted then, but wanted to know if anyone had this occur and if it was remedied.

well right behind the glove box is where the AC unit's fan and motor is... I had something stuck in there that was causing it to make noises.

Mines not exactly short either - lol - Seems whenever I have a new car something goes wrong with it. Nothing beets a BMW for faults.

I don't think any new vehicle is immune from fault, however I find the more reliant they are on sensors the easier they are to fault.

Its a feature of frameless doors.
Give the rubber part that the glass touches a little bit of silicone.

Consider it part of Washing & Waxing & Generally makeing it slippery :p

Try the palstic trim on the outside under the wipers! I know this sounds crazy, but I had the same noise took it to the dealer. He lifted the trim, added another foam spaces and not more rattle!!!! I had been looking for it for weeks - tried the door seal, seat mounting, dash board.

i read somewhere that there is an open gap behind the handbook holder.

small object can fall into it and maybe access some a/c parts behind.

i don't know if this space is related to the fact that you can get cold air into the glovebox.

Yup, I get this as well, at 1,300 -1,500 rpm (in the TDI 140).

However, it wasn't on the car as new - it only started after my crash last summer. I assumed that it hadn't been repaired very well.

It's pretty annoying but it's usually drowned out by Metallica or Deftones or Reuben or.......

I'm still waiting to find out what it is, they wouldn't drive my car when I serviced it because it has a bulge in the tyre wall so need to get them replaced first and then they are happy to look at it..

Finally had the car looked at for repairing this issue, the vibration has now stopped - it seems it was something in the engine compartment as they have replaced it under warranty. Although as most dealers they do not explain themselves very well so I am not entirely sure as to what they did.

Had a rattle start from inside the dash behind the glovebox or so it appeared to be while sitting in the driver's seat. The colder the weather recently, the more noticeable it became.....

Found the source and not quite where I was expecting.

Well, the rattle didn’t quite disappear!

It appears there was more than one coming out of this area, 3 in fact! One down, two to go.

Decided to investigate the lower dash area by removing the lower dash access panel to the Climatronic Fan and Pollen Filter.

Under here I found the main Climatronic Fan Loom wasn’t secured in the fan housing clipping point. Must have nudged it out when I changed the Pollen Filter a month ago or its been loose since I took the fan unit out for cleaning/inspection in the summer. The thick Loom was tapping on the side of the Fan Housing and the sound seemed to come from the top of the Passenger Dash to the Passenger Sun Blind area
Passenger Dash Rattle - 01.JPG
There was still another rattle after that in the top dash area above the Glove Box. This was traced to the forward top edge of the passenger inside door card. This made a tapping noise over the top of the Passenger Dash as though it came from the Windscreen Side Wall Airbag Unit (‘A’ pillar).

Hopefully thats all of them.

Still not quite! A real infestation of rattles and tapping in this area and why just in the last 2 months.

This one was random tapping with heavy thumps on rougher road surfaces. Appeared to come from the corner inside the bottom of the Side Windscreen Airbag panel.

I found my rattle that sounded like it was coming from behind the dash. Everytime I pulled away and on cold start up you could hear it.

It was the ECU holder that was vibrating against the metal inside the rain tray. so stuck foam on all the places that touch the body of the car and rattle is gone.
