Windscreen problems

Post by peter.vw »

Has anyone had a problem with their windscreen? First noticed it last year when driving into the sun I got lots of shiny speckles in the glass but you can see anything other time, thinking I had parked under a tree and had sap on the glass thought no more of it.
Now the sun has started to show its self again and it low in the sky it has come to my notice again, I can now see it driving a night when the light from street lamp hits the glass at a certain angle I get a flash of what looks like crystals in the glass.
I have clean the glass many times but it must be in the glass not on it.

Did you fully remove the sap? You might need to use something with more kick than regular car wash .. Have you tried Autoglym Tar & Glue remover, its suitable for paint & glass.

Hi Have used solvent based cleaners and non solvent based but you cant see it unless the light is right.
It looks like a Crystalline structure in the Perspex that’s sandwiched between the glass and is acting like a prisum in certain light but will give the clay a go incase

Hi Peter, Interesting that you should mention this. On my current Golf GTI Ed30 which I’ve had from new the microscopic particles are within the windscreen and part of the laminate, the exact same issue was on my previous Mk4 Golf 4-Motion. It’s only visible in bright direct sunlight, which bugged my at first but then I thought it was probably VW cost-cutting. I wonder if other manufacturers suffer from this?

Cheers, Steve (aka Hotrod)

Hi Hotrod my dealer tells me that there is nothing reported on VW site about this but he is leaving things open and if I cant clean the screen they are going to get windscreen specialist to look at it and may change under warranty, so might get a happy ending.

Screen now replaced under warranty. Did not know that the screen only carries a 12 months warranty but they replaced mine because of safety grounds.
Wonder how many more screens are like this one but you think its just crap on the glass
