Upgrading to an R

Post by Actus Reus »

Has anybody upgraded to an 'R' from a 'lesser' Roc? I was casually surfing the other day and spotted quite a few ex-demo R's in the dealer network (or so the website says) and I started wondering how much they might give me for my 6 month old car with 3000 miles on it...and would it be easy to transfer finance given that I'd be staying with VW... and, IF that were to be the case, is the 'R' worth the extra cash (and assuming I spend about £30k on the car, how much extra would it be?)...decisions, decisions...

R is absolutely worth the cash over a lesser model.

I sold my GT to get an R and i don't regret it.

Hi

I wanted an R from the start but at the time due to little/no discount at the time (when it launched) I couldn't justify the full RRP in the spec I wanted. After just 8 months of GT ownership I made the swap to an R last October.

The car is a different beast and apart from the extra power, the engine sounds different, turbo whines more audibly, exhaust burbles and sits lower to the road to name but a few things.

So yes the R is great and worth the swap, but at the right price, as I wouldn't suggest paying silly money to get one seeing as the GT is a nice car too.

All I would say is if you’re prepared to travel then you will likely get a better deal, and for the money saved it should justify the distance, and besides it was no chore going 160miles home in my new R...!!

Were you able to get a good price for your 'Roc when you chopped it in? I'm in a 3000mile 6 month old (ish) Candy GT TSi with a decent spec so I'm hoping I'd get a fair trade in as it's low miles (albeit a bit old now)... I might mail a few dealers this afternoon.

it was a around the glass's guide price best condition trade in price...so I lost a quite bit in a short time on my GT. But I haggled like mad on the asking price for the R, so overall price to change / swap is the main consideration and after much deliberation I went for it...

Yeah, I've put out feelers on two cars this afternoon - one Rising Blue and one black R, both otherwise almost identical cars. Depends how much, per month, extra I'll be looking at paying really. I'm hoping it wont be more than another £60 or £70 pcm, with the term obviously going back to three years (currently 2.5 remaining on my one)...but that's perhaps being a bit optimisic on the depreciation on my car.

ok good luck with the enquiries

(the maths is hard for me to comment on as varies by residual, deposit/ interest rates etc) but hopefully they will reach your requirements...

LOL, very hopeful, i would say with p/x price your looking at an extra £300 (and over)a month to swop over 3 years, thats without knowing about your car but going on a p/x price on a 10 plate GT

Yep - the figures are in and the negative equity in my car is astonishing. Depreciation has been over £1000 a month for the first 6 months of ownership (from list price to their first offer on my car). Haggling could reduce it quite drastically I reckon, but nevertheless, it's not going to be a runner - actual monthly payment would only be £70 more than I'm paying on mine, but, as I said, that early hit of depreciation is too much to stomach - so much for good residuals!

^^On what figures are you working that out with ? , how can a car that's going to cost 10k more only cost you another £70 a month ?, thats only £2520 to upgrade over 3 years !!

Using the figures in my email from VW.

Essentially what he's done is extend the term (though I didn't ask him to) by a year - so there's an extra £70 a month and an extra year (which I didn't mention above, sorry!). The extra year I can live with, the killer was the depreciation on my 'Roc - unacceptably high.

Edit: and yes, the final payment might be much bigger, though it'd only ever be to the value of the car, or VW would lose out - he didn't mention the final payment, but, as I say, I was already walking away on the basis of the depreciation on my current car.

I guess the numbers don't sound like they're stacking up, but I got the same trade in for mine after 8 months+6 thousand miles on the clock, as I was offered after 4 weeks+800miles so basically they tried it on at the first dealers...

Alot depends on what they have to play with on the car your buying too, so got a good deal overall.

However after test driving the R I wasn't instantly sure tbh, in the sense of the justifying all the extra cost for about 25% more...power, accleration, etc etc, hence took me hours to decide as the cars are similar in many respects, just one is more extreme...tho I as said before was pleased once I got it.

Yeah, I've got one more deal working on numbers for me - I've given him a target so we'll see. He has a brand new, showroom only, 'R' which is available and is the perfect spec. The temptation to stick it on my card is huge.

However, as you say - can I really justify the outlay? Especially given that a remap will give me almost identical if not slightly more power... We'll see - as it stands I think it's too much money to lose on my current 'Roc. If he brings it down I'll have to do some serious thinking. My sensible side is telling me to wait as the 'Roc was only meant to be a temporary measure for 18months or so after a break-up before I went back to premium sports cars again once my finances had steadied...

Thanks for the replies anyway guys - appreciated.

I did indeed upgrade from the 140 TDI to the R. I commute about 250 miles a week for work and although the diesel was the best choice for the commute, as soon as I saw the R i fell in love straight away and had to have it!

I had the TDI since new and lost about £2000 in the 12 months I had it. Which is not bad considering I put 15000 on the clock! I traded it in for the R and put finance on the rest.

Best decision I ever made, I see so many standard models now and it's even nicer to know that R's are really rare (i've only ever seen 2 on the road and 2 Golf R's).

To be fair I don't thrash the car around like I should, and most of the miles are motorway miles, but I love the sound of the engine and the stares from onlookers when they try to guess what car it is!.

Highly recommended (if you can afford it, go for it!)

So far I have put on about 4000 miles in the 4 months i've had it, lot of driving!
