A Day In The Life Of A Sumatra
When I first started my search for a Scirocco, several colours were the top options on my list.
I was quite surprised when my salesman suggested Sumatra.
Surprised - and intrigued - but certainly not encouraged by the colour swatch on either the sample he showed me, or what I could see on the brochure. The 'spray-on' colour on the VW website was even less appealing.
However, after considerable research (assembling into a Powerpoint file just about every photo of a Sumatra I could find on this Forum and beyond), I went with the dealer's recommendation.
I am well pleased with that choice to say the least (as the number of photos I have taken since, only some of which I have shared on the Forum, testify). Sorry for boring those who aren't into Sumatra; I hope the following pictures help those who are awaiting delivery of one / actively trying to decide on whether to rule it in or out as an option.
Can I now accurately describe the colour?
Short answer, ... No! It's one of the most light-sensitive colours I have seen.
Yesterday I gave the Roc it's first proper wash and wax, then took it for an extended run. My camera accompanied the journey. I was quite astounded to find the variety of 'shades / colours' that turned up at various times of day in different degrees of light.
For the record - 'A Day In The Life Of A Sumatra':
Drying off after the two bucket wash (probably 2.00pm ):
At the same stage, but showing the effects of the sun on the bonnet:
Sitting in the driveway in some shade after the wax session (4.30pm):
In strong sunlight:
The first part of my journey (after 6.00pm) - to visit the car park of a local factory:
15 minutes later, rear in shade, front in bright sunlight:
5 minutes on, on a small country road in some shade:
At the site of a small lighthouse, a few miles from home. I took a variety of pictures at this location as the sun was starting to set (8.45pm):
And now for some really crazy ones (at the same location, within minutes of the others!) - copper?!:
Before I left the lighthouse site:
A few miles further down the road:
Has it turned into a black Roc? No, but the light suggests it has!
And the last photo in the session - phew!
Apparently, under showroom lights, a 'plum' tinge appears!

Where do you stay mate?
I bought my car from Donnelly's near Derry. Mate of mines is a dealer there so got a pretty good deal with it.
Don't worry, I live in Aberdeen, folks live near Derry so I won't cramp your style with my Sumatra Scirocco!

Re: A Day In The Life Of A Sumatra
I'm 3 miles from Donnellys on way towards the city.
Made sense to try and cut a deal with the local man as I had bought my previous car in Cookstown. Tried around the country, but the manager in Donnellys beat every quote I had, including the internet ones.
My salesman mentioned selling a Sumatra Roc to a friend of his some time ago ... one of the reasons why he was able to recommend the colour as he had actually seen it 'in the flesh.'

Couldn't agree more with the comments made. Sumatra is just an Incredible color, depending on the light. I have been driving mine around the west of Ireland all summer. An fantastic car in an amazing color driving around beautiful Locations .What more could you want ?
Re: A Day In The Life Of A Sumatra
I ordered my 122HP Sumatra (called Dark maroon in the Netherlands) and expecting it to arrive in january. Its the BlueMotion version, because fairly i couldn't care less about the speed (we call it stopinglight racing in here...doesnt make sense with all these lights and camera's everywhere), the interior is just great basicly. Hell.. Waiting really takes for ages! Arrgh!
Your photo;s are really fantastic!! Depending on the light the color changes from nearly black (in dark) to dark grey/dark brown/black coloured in the light. Thats really great.

Re: A Day In The Life Of A Sumatra
Thanks, guys ... I'm still in love with the colour!
The distinct lack of Sumatras on the roads of Northern Ireland has also convinced me I've made a good choice.
Mind you, my son was followed by a Viper today and he thought it looked immense!

Beautiful pics, especially the 'copper' ones. I would have chosen Sumatra if I'd had a choice....f#*$'n company car restrictions...

Nice cars, Nice color and Nice photos...
I made the decisions before I read your post, but I really made no regret after watching your photos.
This color is a kind of in between mature and wild. I like it and I m waiting for the delivery by early December.
