1.4 tsi could be axed

Wonder if there's any truth in the above rumour. Having had the engine for over 18 months, I admire the technology and enjoy the power delivery but it's not exactly been reliable for me.........new cylinder head gasket, 2 software updates, ignition coils, spark plugs and fuel injectors! Think i've just been very unlucky though.

VW twincharger could be axed

Volkswagen’s twincharger petrol engine could be on its way out, according to well placed insiders.
The company’s 1.4-litre engine, which mixes turbocharging and supercharging, is said to be too complex and expensive to produce.
Instead, VW engineers now believe that new turbocharging technology can achieve similar results at a much-reduced cost.
The popular twincharger engine, found in numerous VW Group models, won the coveted Engine of the Year award in 2009 and 2010 and was described as “a masterstroke of downsizing technology and a real engineering showcase".

Re: VW twincharger could be axed?
VW have been rumoured for a few years to have a 1.6 tsi underdevelopment, IIRC the twin charged version was mentioned in the official vw press release when they launched the 1.4 back in 2006. Then again a 7 speed wet clutch dsg box and a twin turbo tdi 2.0 have all been rumoured for what 2/3 years... Still no sign so who knows what is in the pipeline.

Re: VW twincharger could be axed?
So the replacement unit will be cheaper to produce. Will VW bring the 1.4TSI replacement Roc in at a lower pricepoint than the current one?

Re: VW twincharger could be axed?
Have just read this weeks Autocar magazine. There is an article about the Audi A1 Quattro on test in Canada. Its states it is being released in 2012. Power by the 1.4TSi Twincharger engine in its 185bhp power form as fitted to the Polo. Hmmmmm.
Maybe the Scirocco will get this instead of the 160PS version.

Re: VW twincharger could be axed?
Read this a couple of days ago too courtesy of TG...
Good news! Audi has announced its A1 supermini will now be available with a 182bhp 1.4-litre TFSI engine, making it the fastest and most powerful A1 on sale today.
Bad news! It's still around two grand more expensive than the equivalent Mini Cooper S.
The new S-line A1 gets the supercharged and turbocharged engine from the Polo GTI generating 182bhp and 184lb ft of torque. Audi claims it will do the 0-62mph sprint in 6.9 seconds, just 0.1 seconds quicker than the 185bhp Mini Cooper S.
It's quite an engine too. The supercharger kicks in at 1,500rpm and retires at 2,400rpm, after which a turbocharger takes over duties from 3,500rpm. Audi says because the supercharger handles the low-range, it has been able to slot in a bigger turbo, for efficiency and economy, you understand, not powerrr.

Re: VW twincharger could be axed?
Hopefully all the engines outputs will be increased when replacement comes out. 300bhp R as standard would be nice.
Re: 1.4 tsi could be axed
Mate, Johno here from NZ no you aren't "unlucky''. If you have seen my thread I had my engine replaced at 6000km after a lot of engine issues. I dug a bit deeper and found that this engine has many ongoing issues.daz3031 wrote:http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArtic ... rs/254741/

Unfortunately buying new technology is a risk, I'm sure we as the guinea pigs have given vw heaps of data to refine / improve the current TSI tecnology.
They can spin it all they like, too expensive etc, truth is they put it out but now realise that it lacks reliability due to its complexity. Unfortunately once my warrenty expires (they did add a year to it with the new engine) I will be paying through the nose. I do enjoy the car when running as it should, but have little faith given the history that it will continue to run well.
Let's face it you don't axe the International Engine of the Year, other than to avoid ongoing problems.
A good friend advised me against buying new technology and to wait...I guess all the advertsing spin won out!
Re: VW twincharger could be axed?
Yup....i wanna see the power / torque graph of that engine.RW1 wrote:That will be interesting driving!Jane wrote:The supercharger kicks in at 1,500rpm and retires at 2,400rpm, after which a turbocharger takes over duties from 3,500rpm.![]()

if ever there's a "hole" in your map...this would show it if that is how the switch over works. no boost in mid range for 1100 rpm! be cacking myself going for an overtake at 2500 rpm!!!

Audi UK wrote: The compact and lightweight four-valve-per-cylinder ‘dual-charged’ engine powers the A1 1.4 TFSI 185PS from rest to 62mph in just 6.9 seconds, and on to a 141mph top speed. Under power, the supercharger is the first to exert its influence, intervening at around 1,500rpm to increase thrust. In most cases it then disengages at around 2,400rpm, to be followed from around 3,500rpm by a boost from the turbocharger to hasten progress yet again.

Re: VW twincharger could be axed?
It doesn't work like that anyway! The quote was cuckoo.
, who ever originally wrote the last paragraph.

Re: VW twincharger could be axed?
but that's how it sounds tho...no boost for 1100 rpm lol.
but in actual fact the turbo is always spinning and at 2400 is making enough boost to cover the SC switch off and by 3500 its making its max boost for powwwwweeeerrrrrr
still there is no replacement for displacement. 2.0 still better than 1.4

Re: VW twincharger could be axed?
Ηave you any specific sources about that? Some rumors say about a new 1.6 turbocharged, since VW is going to need it anyway for its new WRC car, to the forthcoming S1600 category.RW1 wrote:It doesn't work like that anyway! The quote was cuckoo., who ever originally wrote the last paragraph.
