windows opening and doors unlocking on their own in the snow

Post by Joloke »

We woke this morning to be greeted by our Rocco completely covered in snow
when we cleared the snow off we found this :eyepop:
Image
Image
The passengers side window glass had dropped and the car had let snow in on the passengers side
Image

To say im furious is an understatement
We have always had a good relationship with our VW Dealer so went to see him today unfortunately there were only two salesmen in and no service dept :(

Our Salesman has told us to bring it in tommorow and they will plug in to check for faults

We cant blame the salesman its not his fault but if its a known fault VW should recall cars and sort it out,ive already read about another similar incident here on Scirocco Central  :(

Who else has had this Same problem?
I dont want this to become a regular occurance waking up to a car full of snow :grumpy:

Did u check yesterday when locking the car that the windows went up properly? or did u unlock the car before getting snow off?

My driver side wouldn't go up properly on Friday night after issues making it drop to let me in. As soon as that happens the system becomes confused and you have to reset the system by winding the windows all the down and back up again (or something along those lines)

Worked for me after a few mins of flaffing about and made sure both windows were properly up and closed before leaving it.

Jesus, got me worried now for when I unload the snow for tomorrow.

I always feel like a tool walking around my car each time I lock it. Bet people think I'm well pompus "Ooh look at him with his Scirocco checking it's all prim and proper". Show them this, maybe they'll know why!

had it happen once, just opened the door (twice as it was passenger) and press lock again and they went up thank god.

Happens regularly to me, but only in cold weather, windows drop, then when you get out and close the door, windows dont go back up ( yet can be wound up ) Not great, collegue has a 1 series, also with frameless windows...no such problems.

Hmmm, not good. Lets hope they sort it tomorrow.

If at anytime the windows do not drop due to being stuck, always check both side are up when locked up. If not carry out a reset.

- Switch the ignition ON. ( I tend to do it when required with the engine running to up the available voltage.)
- Drop the windows a little way on the controls, then wind up the windows with the controls all the way in one go.
- And without letting go of the switches, continue to hold the "Up" controls for a further couple of seconds.
- Then release the controls and wait a second.
- Select the window controls "Up" again and hold for about 3 to 5 seconds.
- The windows should now operate corrctly again and close on shutting the doors or pressing the keyfob to lock the Scirocco.

Has happened to me twice now, have come back to car and the window is slightly down like yours, had'nt bothered looking if they had gone up on locking.
Just ice related i assume as they go back up manually.

Thanks Guys

ill have to check in future though i still think it something we shouldnt have to put up with

if this is a known issue VW really should be sorting this out so it doesnt happen fullstop :grumpy:

you wouldn't find it acceptable on a daewoo matiz so why should we accept it on cars that cost what ours do

Yes it is ice related in a way. The window controller in One-touch opening & closing mode has lost its closed reference point due to being held in the closed position while trying to unlock the Scirocco. So has to be "reset" as above.

Hate to say this...... its in the manual - Booklet 3.1 under Electric Windows - One-touch opening & closing, restoring One-Touch opening & closing.

Learn the procedure above, as the window dropping a tad happens anytime a window doesn't drop on opening the doors. I do the procedure as I drive away if the Scirocco has initially refused to open a window with the keyfob unlocking or using the door handle. Regardless of the windows current state.

yup let us know what ur dealer has to say.

apparently my passenger side tweeter has "open circuit" and doesn't work at all (not that i would notice such a malfunction) and the passenger side 1 touch window up function only works intermittenly.

guess i should take it to the dealer to sort out really.

the strange thing is the car locked as normal and the windows were in the fully up position at midnight last night when i checked before going to bed( i always say goodnight to my cars see LOL)

There was no reason why it should change?
The keys were nowhere where they could accidentally be pressed but this morning the nightshift gremlins had rolled down the window so its a bit of a mystery?

My dealer was mystified as to why it was only one window on one side?
funnily enough the passengers side door couldnt be opened as it was frozen solid and it took several minutes after getting into the drivers side and starting the engine and firing up the heater before the passenger door was opened :(

it then took a few more minutes before we could get that window to fully close using the power window button

Thats why it a good idea to take it to the dealers tomorrow but I think they will find nothing, no logged faults. Some seem to have this and its the left window each time I've noted. I've caught mine twice, but been able to reset before any mishaps with rain or snow.

There is this, Window Drop but this is about full drop of the window so may not be directly relevant.

The fact it dropped as shown suggests at some point the one-touch has been switched out. ie. your difficulty with the driver/passenger doors as mentioned. In this condition, mine has dropped the passenger window after locking.

Even if you do get the window to close on the full up, just open and close the doors in future. You may find the window stays down but not quite as much as in the photo. This is a signal that the one-touch is inhibited and time to do a "reset".

This maybe what has happened. I've had it even when it's only been raining because I triggered the one-touch to stop working. So now when in doubt or I have triggered the inhibit of the one-touch, as said, I perform the window reset as it is simple and easy as you drive off the drive.

Just want to share the winter experience I had today.
After spending a good half hour trying to get the window to reset using the above mention procedures etc, just to find that every time I got out of the car, it dropped again, not going back to it's original possition, it just struck me.
The outside door handles on my 2009GT, allthough much more modern looking, is just as bad as they were on my -75 Scirocco TS in terms of handeling snow and cold weather.
Turned out that some ice had got stuck in the door handle, keeping the handle just one milimeter open causing the window not to reset.
It was barely noticeable by the eye, then handle just had a small small gap and I had to push it in to get the window to go back up.
So, if you like me, have a lot of snow/ice melting down into the handle just to freeze back up, that might be one thing to look at.

great tip that i never even though to look for that
I do remember on Sunday morning though when it happened i couldnt shift the passengers door handle or the door, maybe just may water was between the outside handle had turned to ice, expanded and put the door handle into a "confused" state thinking the door was being opened??

Still not right though is it,the cars arnt exactly cheap and you think they would be able to cope with conditions like ours considering VW export them to other countries with colder climates than ours

Decided to take a look at the Scirocco just now with VCDS....

Address 42: Door Elect, Driver Labels: 1K0-959-701-MAX3.lbl
1 Fault Found:
00932 - Electric Window Motor; Drivers Side (V147)
005 - No or Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaptation - Intermittent

Address 52: Door Elect, Pass. Labels: 1K0-959-702-MAX3.lbl
2 Faults Found:
00933 - Electric Window Motor; Passenger Side (V148)
005 - No or Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaptation - Intermittent
01817 - Exterior Door Handle Switch in Pass. Door (F273)
008 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent

Interesting what it has logged in the Door Controller fault memories.

Had no uncommanded dropping windows (yet!) since it went very cold. I've had one event where the keyfob was pressed and the windows didn't drop (frozen).

Also got AirCon fault/Voltage faults as well. Cold weather related

All fault codes cleared and windows reset. Have to see what re-appears

I am fully having similar concerns . Why do the windows have to drop when the car is unlocked ? My 1 series pillar less doors also only dropped the window when the door handle was pulled to get in ? Then back up when the door was closed . Really don't get why vw have made them drop when the car is unlocked

Why else would you unlock the doors.. if not to get in..? (or am I missing something here!?)

The other thing you can do is configure the door opening in the MFD so that only the drivers window drops when you unlock the car. Press twice to unlock/drop the passenger door etc.. I've done this on mine and on my dad's CC, as I didn't want all windows dropping in cold weather etc.

They still both drop when you pull the keys out of the ignition though....

Just seems to me the Roc is rubbish in cold weather situations if not ported or garaged... shame.
