hello boys and girls

i have a question, more for the veterans of this forum really..

next thurs/fri we are expecting snow where i live and probably all winter for that matter how do you handle your 'rocco in the snow?
im coming from a corsa auto and without the winter 2nd gear start button pressed, it was slightly scary so as you can imagine im a little bit nervous about my car as everything is quicker, ... i get the general impression i can let the DSG do th auto accelerate stuff to start with but that will only take me soo far surely?

I was quite impressed in the big snow dump last winter.

The DSG is pretty good at just getting you going at walking pace without having to give it any/much juice. The disadvantage is probably not being able to start the car going in 2nd or 3rd like you would in a manual but it coped pretty well. It's very good at downhill too. It'll shift down to 2nd and keep you nicely on the limit of engine breaking and momentum at a nice controlled low speed.

did you find that it skids a lot when pulling away?

It helps if the ESP is switched off while in this situation (or when on loose gravel) using the centre console switch.

Found the Scirocco would only drive forward in soft snow. Reversing is a no-no (Even with brand new tyres and max tread depth) and you have to park so as you can go forward when moving off again. Or carry carpet tiles cut in half in the boot (or fit snow socks to the front wheels - VW sell them.).

Generally if you drive sensibly for the conditions its fine.

Once the DSG creep had got me moving i gave it some moolar and I was out in a jiffy

I fitted my winter tyres and wheels yesterday so hopefully I will have a lot less problems in the snow and ice than I had last winter. For info I have fitted Yokohama W.drive 205/55 on 16" steel wheels

Haven't driven my Roc in the snow yet but I had a DSG fitted golf last year and loved it in the snow. I just let it pull my along while I laughed at all the stranded Mercs, BMWs and Audis.

I was out in some horrendous weather last year and never had any problems. As long as you can get the doors open, of course...

that's the reason i sold the Beemer, 6 weeks last dec/Jan my car didn't move an inch. absolutely useless in snow and ice. had no problems before that with the MK5 GTi.

Yeah, I was driving a Boxster S last year - and whilst I couldn't be as quick in the bends as my Dad could driving my Mum's Micra, I never got stuck. Reversing up slopes was a bit of a pain mind you... The flipside was the ability to perform 400m powerslides given a big enough empty car park.

you might be right, me plus auto box, 286BHP, and normal tyres equals disaster

andy, what problems did you have last year?

I couldn't get up the big hill to where my house is on more than one occasion. Once momentum is lost it was very hard to get going again. I reckon the wide low profile summer tyres are the main problem - stating the obvious there I know

ha, i think thats my fear, i live in a tight housing estate, im having visions of the car getting stuck on a big block of snow, and the DSG not doing the business, i give it the big right foot and c'est la vie I bounce into someone's front garden

Wel with my edition 30 i just could not get to the top of the hill (possibly due to the stupid family that had been using it as a sleigh slope the day before !!!!), in the end i gave up as i kept sliding backwards and the last slide back nearly had my alloys scraped up against the kerb, with the alloys being £500 + vat i thought it was better to not bother, the car then stood for a week

I did that also, slipped at the roundabout at the end of the motorway - anyway the council paid for the allow replacement in the end

Can I just say that I drove my Roc Diesel to Edinburgh from Newcastle and back again in what only can be described as a white out. The Roc performed brilliantly even with those 235 Tyres. The whole car never missed a beat and I drove up to 40 mph in thick snow on the A1. Tracked straight and true. Only I had to avoid other road users who are still using their brakes! But pretty good performer anyway. Only thing was the check tyre indicator came on whilst driving in the snow.
