Re: engine cover 170 tdi
I would think it is similar to mine which has 3 'plugs' underneath, there are 2 at the front & 1 in the middle of the rear. the front 2 push down into locators and the rear one requires sliding forwards to remove. they are quite firmly secured but trying pulling the front edge up at either side (you should feel the 'plugs' pop out, think 2" of leverage should do the trick from memory) & then pull forward.

Re: engine cover 170 tdi
5 plastic pegs from the outer part of the cover (cover is in 2 parts, the middle silver bit sits within the outer part) fit into rubber gromits (assuming that they haven't changed the design from the 170TDI PD to the 170TDI CR).
Be careful, the rubber gromits split easily and/or fall out of their mountings attached to the engine. My Golf 170 TDI went in for some warranty work on the engine and came out with an annoying rattle. The rattle was that the dealership technicians had split 2 of the 5 gromits and had lost another, leaving the cover pretty much just placed on the engine loose, and the cover kept slipping around until they replaced the gromits.
