What is that loud bang when pulling away from stand still?
Hi all,
Only just found this forum, and it's great!!!
Had my Scirocco for a few weeks now, and love it to bits!!!
Previous car was a 57 reg TT which I kept for less then a year, as I could never find a comfortable driving position in it, and always felt claustrophobic
The Scirocco is in a different league from that point of views.
It looks smaller then the TT, but feels far more specious and has a proper back seat. (not that I use it much...)
Question though, every once in a while when pulling off from start (traffic light etc) if I put my foot down, I hear a really loud bang coming from the back? It’s almost as if the exhaust has exploded!
Mine has a DSG box by the way.
Can someone explain to me please what that is, and whether it is normal?

if its the noise that the car makes when you change gear, especially when accelerating fast, then its normal. Its been kind of engineered to make a popping sound when the dsg changes gear.
If its not that then im not sure what it could be

Could it be when the wheels spin and the traction control kicks in. I get a very loud bang sometimes and if I'm really pushing it in the wet it can be a few bangs in quick succession. very annoying!

That's your wheels bouncing whilst scrabbling for traction, ease the throttle on and it wont happen You'll get the same with any high powered front wheel drive car,my old civic type-r was a lot worse than the scirocco for thatheavymetalmayhem wrote:Could it be when the wheels spin and the traction control kicks in. I've driven a lot of high powered front wheel drive cars (previous car was a Cooper S and before that a Type R) but I have never experienced bang like the Scirocco loosing traction. Not being able to balance the clutch and the control that gives you is one of the disadvantages of DSG.

Look at my vid in the mod section I'm running more power than standard and I dont suffer with that problem

Nice video but you had a rolling start before you put your foot down and it was dry. I find the 'bang' catches me out occasionally in the wet when pulling away from a round about for example.

Re: What is that loud bang when pulling away from stand still?
I dont like that noise but I do like the noise we are talking about when the exhaust pops on the gear changes, I dont suffer with the wheels bouncing though as I am more gentle with the throttle, smooth inputs on any car will make it perform betterrobrob wrote:Same here...dchuraman wrote: i hate that noise! makes me feel like i'm battering the car!

Re: What is that loud bang when pulling away from stand stil
I've just bought a 60 plate 2.0 TSi (210) and it now has 2k on the clock.
I've noticed (actually a mate noticed) that under hard acceleration the exhaust pops between changing gears as the the revs drop. He seems to think that it might be running rich! Is he right? is it possible? and should a brand new motor straight out the factory be doing this? I thought it was just a characteristic of a sporty car/ exhaust system.
Can anybody put my mind at rest before I return to the dealer and potentialy embaress myself.

It sounds normal , on the R you can be sat and just rev it in neutral and you get little pops as the revs drop off, enjoy the noise

I had a TT too, Loved it. Needed four seats though - had to go.
With regard to your bang on acceleration - You sure no ones shoved a potato in your exhaust ?

Something reported in Autocar this week on their 'R' - they suspect it might be the 'diff.
