Sat Nav rubbish??

Post by cirkz »

Hi,

I tried using the Sat Nav for the first time the other day and have to say I was very dissapointed.

I will give my specific example of why!

I wanted to input an address of High Street, Burnham, SL1 7JD.

I put in SL1 and it forced me to pick 'Slough'. This was the only option, Burnham was not an option.

Will this clearly would take me to the wrong place. It would take me to Slough high street instead of Burham High Street!

That is just ridiculous! Is it me not knowing how to use it or is the Sat Nav actually that rubbish?!

:?

The RNS510 is one of the best OEM sat navs on the market IMO, that said it will be beaten by a proper stand alone unit like the Tomtom's etc

If I know in advance, more than 10 mins notice and I'm at home or near a computer with an SD card slot I use this

http://vwlabs.com/destinations/search" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; 'sync' it then load the POI on the RNS510 from the SD card by putting it in the slot in the front and because it has the Lat/longtitude co-ordinates built in, takes you to the front door every time.

In effect if you break down the postcode: SL1 = Slough and then 7 = Burnham.

Must admit it took me a while to get used to this as well but once you get your head round it, it really is a superb unit.
Well no, because that is exactly what I did!

Try it yourself if you don't believe me!

'SL1 7' only leaves you one option = Slough!

But burnham is slough.... And if you've put in say SL1 7, the street options will be only for roads that exist with that postal area. Anyway slough high street is SL1 1... So it would not route you there.

You can at any point in the destination entry process bring up a map showing the exact position you'll be routed too.

The biggest problem with sat Nav's is trust and user error. Stick in your post code and other details and just TRUST it. Follow the directions and it will get you there.

A lot of folks start following the directions then half way through think "nah this isn't right, Ill go this way instead". Then they moan that the nav didn't get them to where they needed to go. Not what you're doing but it comes down to trusting the tech again.

Will have to put it to the test again at some point then with the exact same destination!

What your saying does make sense, just so used to using a Tom Tom whereby you put the full postcode in!

One slight irritation for me is; whenever I plan a journey either with SD card POI or when I used to type it in long hand, because of where I live the A19 is a much better route south yet it always wants to send me across to the A1 at every junction where an opportunity to get off the A19 and drive across to the A1exists. I have had to pretend there are delays on the A1 and 'programme' them in (right down to Scotch Corner) before it suggests the A19 as an alternative

A minor irritation, as obviously I ignore its advice until I rejoin the A1 at Boroughbridge, jct 49

Why go to the bother of programming that in when you can just switch route guidance off until you reach Jct49 and then switch it on, at the touch of a button, and start following direction again from there?

Personally I find the Sat nav very good. Much better than the ford one I had previous.

My last car was a MB and had the latest comand sat nav system fitted, think it was a £2500+ option! The VW one is much better IMO.
