Hill Hold Question

Hill Hold Question

My understanding of this function us that under normal conditions with DSG in drive that if I press the footbrake and release it on a hill then the car won't move until I press the accellorator pedal. Mine doesn't, it holds for one sec and then starts forward. No release noise is heard as I have read in other topics. I have asked the salesman and he is looking into it as he thinks it needs to be enabled somewhere.

Is it not working or am I misunderstanding what it should do?

It holds the car for a second or two and then the gearbox creep will take over and start to move you forwards.

It's there just to stop you rolling back between coming off the brake and on to the throttle.

No gearbox creep on mine on a hill incline. The system releases the brakes after 2 seconds and the car rolls backwards unless the accelerator has been used to make the car go forwards or the foot brake is pressed again. There is a cautionary note regarding rolling backwards in the owner's handbook!

Just picked mine up (again) and happened to be on a gradient and it worked as follows:

1. Pulled up at lights on a gradient.
2. Neutral gear, pressed down on the break and released the break
3. Car held for approx 2 seconds (hill hold)
4. Found gear, throttle bit and moved off.
5. Big stupid grin

NB. Item 5 is optional.

Must admit, hill hold on the manual box is one of my favourite features of the car. And the side lights that come on when you make a turn at night. Another big stupid grin...

Probably dumb question, but does it work when facing down and reversing back?!? I have a car port on a hill, and always drive in..... :)

Yes it does work in reverse (On a DSG box anyway)

Yes, but I believe it doesn't work if you are going down hill.

Is the function the same with manual and Auto? Im picking up my Auto Scirocco next week and I haven't driven an Auto gearbox for about 10 years. The last was my brothers Mondeo and with that you drove up a hill to say some traffic lights. Braked, took your off the brake and waited....for as long as it took......lights go to green.... foot on throttle......away....(your left foot was purely for filling your trouser leg)

I don't understand this 1 or 2 second hold and then either creep or roll. That doesn't mean hill hold to me.

While my brother had that Auto Mondeo he had a Passat as a courtesy car which was a low engined turbo and he said at hills it constantly rolled back because the turbo didn' t pick up and it didn't hold on the hill.

^ In the DSG it holds for about 2 seconds when you take your foot of the brake thats it, TBH its enough, just leave your foot on the brake till you want to go, the hill hold is there to allow you to take your foot of the brake and onto the accelerator pedal without rolling back, its not there so you can just sit on hills without rolling, its probably a safety thing that you cant just rely on the car to do it all the time for you

Please can someone help only just found out after 6 weeks of owning a 170 gt manual box?
That I have hill hold control!! Please can someone give me an idiots guide how to use it, example what do I do when I
Stop on an incline
Don`t want to practice with a bin lorry behind me

Hi Alan,

From memory, if you pull up on a hill, foot on brake, in gear clutch depressed. When you take foot off brake it holds you for a couple of seconds. Will roll back after this time!!
