Problem with 7 Speed DSG

Post by tildesley »

I've got a problem with my dsg though i think...
got the 7 speed, doing 50/60mph in 5th, accelerating fine, 1 thru 4. after a minute or 2 at 50mph, i go to over take the standard HGV, full foot to floor and it accelerates slower than any other gear, it just doesnt seem right, it goes from 50 to 70 in about 30 seconds, it crawls through the rev range

to bypass this, i now switch to manual and whip it into 4th, complete the move, then back to drive again.

is that normal :?
(sorry for thread hijack)

I get the same if I don't trigger the kick down by pressing the accelerator hard down. Particularly above 50mph. It's a characteristic of the 7 speed DSG.

I just flip the paddle control to drop one or two gears and then put the foot down. The autobox is an economy box and tends to think that way, hence holding a higher gear and slow acceleration.

No hijacking going on here, you started it mate :)

As RW1 says, I think it's "as designed", so to work around it, either I change to Sports mode or just paddle my way down the gears to get it into the revs where things start to happen - both ways just puts a big grin on my face - and it's quite fascinating to see how quick it is even though it's a tiny 1.4 with a very moderate 160 BHP.

i have not noticed this when i overtake using the comfort mode.

maybe its the way i overtake. I don;t tend to slipstream before making the move.

I often open a gap between myself and the vehicle in front. sometimes as much as 1 & 1/2 car lengths.

when the road is clear, that space allows everything to build up and i tend to feel the force whilst next to the vehicle.

after completing, i decelarate ( not braking of course) so that i can tidy up. By then i would have been around 3-4 car lengths ahead.

Hi tildesley,

As micke_011 said, I tend to knock the DSG into Sport mode [or kick-down] if I want to accelerate between 50-70. It's just way more responsive in Sport mode for overtaking (even a little too twitchy). I'm finding I use it more and more for general overtaking – and when I'm in a bad mood.

I don't know about others but I wish the 7sp DSG box had Normal, Sport and Sport+. I feel there is too much of a gap between Normal and Sport. One feels nice and easy to drive and Sport is a bit too aggressive on some occasions.

Furthermore I do remember reading somewhere that acceleration between 50-70 is a true test of a car's power. With our cars only having a 1.4l, this is where it falls a little short. I do notice a difference between this and my last car – a 2.0l TDI diesel – when accelerating on the motorway at between 50-70mph. The old diesel had much more torque than this but was less fun to drive :)

Finally, I don't think your DSG box is faulty. You're just gonna have to learn to use it in a different way to a manual or whatever you've come from.

Go easy on the throttle until its all run in nicely

Let the front tyres down to 30.5psi, floor it hard! Light throttle its immediate before you can blink, foot down hard holds the gear and it reaches 6,400 rpm in D or S. :D . But you won't like what it does at 6,400 rpm from 1st to 2nd. You certainly know the rear engine mount is soft!
