How you finding the Roc for stonechips?
Just wondering how people are find the Rocs paintwork is holding up to stonechips?
I have two huge ones on the bonnet of mine and I have noticed the front has a fair amount of the smaller "white dot" chips on the bonnet.
Its no where near as bad as my Honda Civic was but my BMW Z4 was much better for not getting/showing them. I guess the thinkness of the paint, colour and bonnet shape have something to do with this.
Wish I had bought some kind of film protection when it was new. Still at this rate it will be getting a front end spay and film put on soon! I do a 50 mile a day round trip motorway commute which I am guessing is the cause.

not much of an issue bonnet wise, chip on roof and front drivers side wheel arch, the alloys seem to have atteacted a few chips (not from kerbing)

I have a black 'un and a few chips on the bonnet, however the paint is nowhere near as shit as on my Merc Vito where the bonnet looks like a pebble dashed wall!
Must pick up a paint stick.

Re: How you finding the Roc for stonechips?
Mine hasn't got any yet, but from past VW experience, i've found the solid (non-metallic) colours to be softer for chipping. The metallics are easier to chip the lacquer surface, but rarely the colour underneath.
VW paint is harder than most, but these water based paints (for environmental reasons) are a little softer than the solvent paints of old.

The harder the paint the easier it is to chip. The softer the paint is though the more resistant it is to chips but it scratches and marks alot easier.

paintwork is fine but the bit of plastic surrounding the air dam is pitted, fog surrounds are fine...

Re: How you finding the Roc for stonechips?
thats not exactly true, the less paint that is on (harder) the better it is at being less likely to chipchr15 wrote:The harder the paint the easier it is to chip. The softer the paint is though the more resistant it is to chips but it scratches and marks alot easier.
the more paint that is on (softer) the easier it is to chip.
i dont exactly know why, as in a way it doesnt exactly make sense, but with working in a bodyshop and seing bonnets and bumpers that have been sprayed allready they chip alot worse than factory paint or paint on new panels

Re: How you finding the Roc for stonechips?
Bit of a strange one. My old golf was pretty badly stone chipped on the front and that had a high paint reading, checked with paint guage, for an original car. The paint was extremely hard on that. Other cars I have seen such as a black honda with crap soft Jap paint, with a much lower depth reading, are not as chipped but do mark or scratch easier. Maybe its something that varies?ryancooke wrote:thats not exactly true, the less paint that is on (harder) the better it is at being less likely to chipchr15 wrote:The harder the paint the easier it is to chip. Mine is taking a hammering already, 1500M and 4 big chips on the bonnet! And to make it worse I have been so careful to keep my distance to avoid the 'becasue its new'.

Picked up an horrific stone chip mark on the M6 last night. Big piece flew up from the road and scratched the bonnet

Re: How you finding the Roc for stonechips?
I've only done about 1500 miles and I think it is still fine (touch wood), nothing major or noticeable at this stage anyway.
TÜV Approved, Nürburgring Tested.
Re: How you finding the Roc for stonechips?
I don't know about the Roc but I've been driving a Passat for 3 years and the stone chips are awful! True, it is black and I do reasonably high mileage but I've got much more peppering on my bonnet than I'd expect from a car of this quality to be honest. So I do have a question mark over VW paint quality however it hasn't stopped me ordering a white GT! so fingers crossed on better paint. What does everybody else think?
Hmmmmmmmm, smoked dodgy fags you have!

Re: How you finding the Roc for stonechips?
With previous VWs, I have found that solid colours chip much worse than metallics/pearlescents. It might be the laminate effect, as meallics and pearls are a colour coat with a top layer of lacquer. I have never had a chip penetrate to the undercoat/primer on a metallic car. My Tornado Red Golf had a few chips through to the undercoat though.
No chips yet on my Pewter Scirocco with 750 miles on the clock (early days).

Re: How you finding the Roc for stonechips?
My mrs said it was my drivin that caused all my stone chips, glad it ain't just me! 'rocco ain't as tough to mk4 golf in same colour. I buy light coloured cars 'coz the chips don't show so bad.
Re: How you finding the Roc for stonechips?
I know this post is quite old but I'm due to take delivery of my Rocco this month & I was wondering if anyone could shed some more light on where abouts they get stone chips. I will use mine as a daily commute on motorways etc & my last car has taken a battering. I've already decided to get the a clear bra stone chip guard put on the car but the kit is £400 fitted & its another £100 to have the whole bonnet covered as apposed to just the front of the bonnet covered up to the top of the VW badge.
Does anyone recieve stone chips above this mark & how often?
Also the kit comes with a headlight protection film but do you think it would be worth while getting the side light/indicators & fog lights protected as well?
Thanks in advance.

Re: How you finding the Roc for stonechips?
bonnet, edge of roof above windcreen, front bumper, the interlargos wheels also are prone to chips due to the blade design, you get one and then you get over it

Re: How you finding the Roc for stonechips?
Just two on the front near the bottom of the bonnet. Small, but through to the metal. Noticed while waxing at the weekend. Done 3000 miles now.

Re: How you finding the Roc for stonechips?
I have 2 or 3 on my head lights, about the same on my bonnet, 1 on my front bumper and 1 on the black grille above it, oh and 1 on my windscreen. Grrrrr.
I can rely on my car, it's my Roc!!!

800 miles and none so far, (although I've probably made a rod for my own back saying that )
