Re: Which diesel? 140 or 170?
I can not properly comment on it but this is the info I have. I only test drove a remapped 140TDI and felt awesome and was suppose to be more like the 170 (I went for the 140TDI in the end due cash/insurance). When I was deciding between engines the sales man told me that the 140 feels similar to the 170 up to about 3000rpm, it then loose its puff while the 170 will still pull strong. I have not test driven the 140 as it is so can't know for sure. Hopefully in a few weeks when she arrives at the dealer I will know. But I expect you will feel the difference so don't worry and people on these forums who have the 170TDI haven't really said a bad comment on it. How did the 140TDI you test drove feel?mickscirocco wrote:Hi ive ordered a 170 last week, when it arrives what differance will it have over the 140,i test drove the 140,will i be able to tell the differance just to look at them as tdi 170 isnt wrote on, and also what does CR mean ( 170CR) when i ordered mine it was just 170GT TDI.

as a GT it will have chrome tail pipes, I believe the 140 & 170 have different parts of the TDi badge in redmickscirocco wrote:will i be able to tell the differance just to look at them as tdi 170 isnt wrote on
CR means Common Rail as in the type of diesel engine, diesel engines used to be PD Pump Düse (mark 5 golf era diesels) which had 4 fuel pump injectors which gave a higher power output that previous diesel engines but the new CR units are one component rather than linked parts allowing higher injection pressure & a higher power output for less effortmickscirocco wrote:and also what does CR mean ( 170CR) when i ordered mine it was just 170GT TDI.

Re: Which diesel? 140 or 170?
Mick, as I am in the process of choosing between 140/170 TDI or 210TSI, can you just clarify what you tested? You say you tested tsi210 and tdi140 which was awesome so went diesel, but your signature says tdi170! Did you just figure that if the 140 was awesome that the 170 would be even better or have I misunderstood? I am testing a 140 tomorrow but the dealer doesn't have a TSI or 170 to compare it to. I am hoping that the 140 impresses me enough to save me the expense of going to either of the others!

Re: Which diesel? 140 or 170?
they didnt have a 170 gt in just the 140gt,which i test drove, the first on i drove was the tsi 210,it was nice and very fast, i nearly went with that one there and then, but the dealer had the 140 there so for peace of mind i test drove that, and im glad it was fast and comfy, for the diesel really impressed,so that why i ordered the 170 gt it has to be better and the review say so, and to be honest the diesel suits me better as im in the forces i do some miles, 170 gt or 140 gt the tsi was good but you cant help but smash the high revs it will drink the fuel, DIESEL ALL THE WAY.

Re: Which diesel? 140 or 170?
Definately the 170. Having just migrated from a 140 Golf GT Mk6 (the 170 GTD wasn't available when I ordred the Golf) the difference is phenominal. Fuel consumption is not too dissimilar (when you drive carefully!) and the extra pulling power is well worth the 2-3 mpg loss.

Re: Which diesel? 140 or 170?
Just gone for the 170 diesel myself after driving a Mk5 140 diesel for the last two years, and instantly I felt the extra power on the test drive, and I have to say the sound of the engine from inside the car was awesome!
One question I had, which seems answered, was whether the GT 170 came with chrome pipes as the brochure says only the 210ps petrol does? Also, the change gear indicator, again says only on 210 petrol, but when I test drove the 170 the change gear tip was on the highline computer.... why does the brochure say one thing but you get something different in the flesh?
All better for it though I think!

Re: Which diesel? 140 or 170?
Not sure... It definitely used to be the case as I collected mine at the end of april and have both the gear change indicator (which I thought would be standard on all GT spec rocs) and the chrome tailpipes... but I think the 140 still doesn't come with the chrome...
I only test drove the 2.0 tsi and the 170 tdi still hoping to get a remap though
Is seat's 280bhp tdi leon touring car the same cr block??

Re: Which diesel? 140 or 170?
I test drove the 140 and the 170 and the 2lt tsi but if the 140 had been the only option I would have gone with the petrol, I cant fault the performance of mine, I keep hearing comments that the 170 is a remapped 140 but what the extra weight about and why can you remap a 140 to 160 but you can remap a 170 to 200 if they are identical power units

Can't answer question about brochure / reality, but I can confirm that my GT 170 is precisely as you describe - chrome tailpipes and gear change indicator.nicknotts wrote:Just gone for the 170 diesel myself after driving a Mk5 140 diesel for the last two years, and instantly I felt the extra power on the test drive, and I have to say the sound of the engine from inside the car was awesome!

Re: Which diesel? 140 or 170?
Gotta love the GT 170 - 60mpg when you're good, 60 mph when you're not (on local two way roads of course, 70 mph on the motorway and not an ounce more, officer )
OK, I haven't driven the 140 but would have gone for that little bit extra oomph anyway, with the GT spec just the icing on the cake.
I wouldn't slate the 140 though - a very good engine and if that is what floats your boat, that's good with me.
(Just need to see more Scirocco in Cornwall that say "Hi" when our paths cross, but that's for a different thread......)

Just to let you know the Chrome tailpipes are basically tin cans with the top and bottom cut off... you can buy them from the parts department of your local stealer for £55 plus VAT I believe

Re: Which diesel? 140 or 170?
jammyd, I'm looking for those myself but couldn't find them among the accessories and I read somewhere that VW stopped selling them for some unknown reason. I can still get'em here in Sweden but they're about 175 quid for the pair which is just mental so if anyone has any ideas where they can be bought, feel free to send me a PM.
Candy White 1.4 TSI 160 - DSG, ACC, 18" Interlagos (Euro Premium&Sport packs), Alu Door Sills, Current VCDS Mods Needle Sweep, Cornering Fog Lights, Alarm Chirp, Emergency Break Warning, Dension Gateway 5, sort of..
Re: Which diesel? 140 or 170?

Mine doesn't have it, unless I have not found it!
