I believe VAG recommend castrol oil for their engines, if you are on a longlife regime then it will be Longlife SLX III.

Midlife, not sure about the 1.4 engine but the 2 litre does like to sip oil so I would check it at least once a month, more if its starting to go down. By the time the oil light comes on you are getting into dangerously low oil territory and if not near a supply you run the risk of damaging the engine. Takes 2 minutes to lift the bonnet and check the dipstick.

Well popped the other day to the VW garage and spoke to them about which oil, It all depends on what service program your car is on, i think mine must be about 15k or every 2 years. Anyway my car needs to be topped up with Castrol SLX - Longlife 5w-30,

Here is a picture of the bottle I was given to help guys on the same service plan pick it out :)

I would check the handbook carefully if you are on long life servicing.

I bought one litre of top-up synthetic oil for my Audi following the recommended (top of the oil range) spec in the handbook and it cost me £18

Anyone know the oil specified for the interval service plan? Mine is half way down the middle bit of the dipstick, area B, after 4200 miles.

Thanks

I have a feeling it is still the same oil, something I seem to recall asked over on one of the gti forums with respect to longlife on the current model gti. Quick call to the service department will confirm this mate.
