Hey, I'm new here.
Thinking of buying a scirocco, but heard something negative yesterday which worries me. I was discussing the new 1.4 scirocco with a collegue of mine and here's what he told me:
Whenever you produce a car which generates many hp from a small engine (e.g. 1.4 which has 160 hp), your engine will not last very long. This is because the small engine cannot take the constant "stress" of yielding such high energy, esp. with a turbo.
Is there some truth in this?
Thanks in advance

Re: 1.4 scirocco engine
Hi khiladi,
The 1.4TSi comes with a long pedigree. Yes there are the odd engine failures but that does not appear to be anything different to other engines/manufacturers or there are no trends.
The 1.4TSi has for a long time had a turbo only. The new 160ps has been in production for just over two years with the added supercharger unit. So some higher mileage engine units are now around. Generally it's behaving well in relation to your stressing query.
Don't forget your new Scirocco will come with warranty cover as laid out in the VW brochure.

your mate is an idiot.khiladi wrote:Whenever you produce a car which generates many hp from a small engine (e.g. 1.4 which has 160 hp), your engine will not last very long. This is because the small engine cannot take the constant "stress" of yielding such high energy, esp. with a turbo.
mitsubishi evo's only have a 2.0 engine and they can happily knock out 600bhp.
it really annoys me when people come to the conclusion that an engine is weak because its small, without any evidence whatsoever.
also the 1.4tsi one engine of the year awards AGAIN this year.
and it will put out 200bhp in standard form i.e. from the factory when the audo s1 is released.
the 2013 golf gti will use a 1.6T engine that will produce 220bhp. small turbo/twin turbo engines are the future.
222bhp & 340Nm

Re: 1.4 scirocco engine
I imagine when they first started just bolting turbos onto sub 1.6 litre engines you got into a bit of trouble - the early Renault 5 turbos spring to mind. But modern engines are so much more reliable and better engineered. I doubt that it will go as far as a large BMW diesel but I reckon it will outdo many other engines of similar size.

Re: 1.4 scirocco engine
in the modern day commuting life we all live in, i doubt you can max 160bhp out of any engine.
as soon as i put my foot down, there is a speed camera/ jam/ pothole nearby, so just keep the setting at 'comfort' , sit back, relax and enjoy the music.
ah! if you are on the M6 motorway, just put the cruise control on at 50mph. Its the speed limit there until next year!
like this, your engine will not be stressed at all.
