First 1.4 TSI in Belfast

I took delivery of a 1.4 TSI on Friday . What a car , Im absolutely delighted with it.

They don't come as standard but they can be fitted as an option.

Can you tell me if your 1.4 has black or grey roof lining? In Southern Ireland, the 1.4 comes with a grey roof lining, rather than the black that comes with the 2.0 TSI. To get the black roof lining on the 1.4 you have to get the sport pack, which isn't an option in the UK. I'm thinking of ordering my 1.4 in the North to save a few thousand. I'm thinking about the truffle leather, but don't think I want to match it with a grey roof lining, so want to be sure I can get around that.

Its a nice light grey colour
I did my test drive in a 2.0 with the black lining and found it very dark and oppressive especially with the tinted rear windows.
I am very pleased with the colour I got.

Do you have the merlin cloth, rather than leather? According to this page http://car.kak.net/2008/07/03/the-new-v ... -in-depth/ the roof comes as "Titanium black", rather than "Pearl gray" if you get the 2.0TSI, or if you get any other model either with the sport package (not applicable to the UK, I don't think) or if you get leather.

Can anybody confirm that you get the black roof lining when you get a 1.4 with leather?

I'm thinking of doing the same, but I don't know if the figures stack up for bringing in a brand new car though.
Irish 1.4 Manual + Alarm + ACC + Lights&Vision seems to be the same spec as the basic UK 1.4. That's €30,600 down south, £18,395 up north.

I reckon I'd land the northern car for €28,100 after tax. If I've done the figures right this time...

For me maybe not worth the guarantee + resale hassle, but if sterling went back down it'd be different

I still haven't decided yet for sure, but this is what I'm thinking. If I was to by in the South, I'd get the 1.4 160PS with sport package, Interlagos alloys, lights and mirror pack, RCD 510 radio and multi-media socket (standard in North), multi-function s'wheel, parking sensors and tyre pressure monitor. That all comes to a bit over €33k. Buying up North I'd get all that, plus leather, dynaudio soundpack and of course the ACC, which comes as standard. This comes to just over £19k without VAT - that's what you'd pay the dealer in the North. Then add Irish VAT and VRT and it comes to about €30k. That's taking the exchange rate as it is now, about 90p.

Going on those extras and at the current exchange rate, the saving is about €3k, but your also getting leather and ACC. If you were to add ACC and leather down South, the saving would be up to about 5 or 6k.

I presume you're looking at the 160PS in the South and not the 122PS, which doesn't seem to be available in UK.

I was in the vehicle registration office yesterday, checking exactly how it works. You might know all this already, but in case not: You buy the car in the North at the ex VAT price, then pay the VAT down South (21.5% of the Euro equivalent of whatever you paid the dealer) and pay the VRT, 20% (for the 1.4 160PS) of the open market selling price of the car in the South. The VRO didn't have the OMSP of the 1.4 yet, so I filled out a form for them to calculate it for me and they're going to get back to me on it. I think the OMSP is 90% of the retail price though. I'll let you know what they get back to me with anyway.

Yeah thanks for the above. I think I was working it out right, I did

Sterling converted to euro = £18,395 / 0.865 = €21,266
Extra VAT = €21,266 x 1.215 / 1.15 = €22,468
VRT = €30,600 x 0.92 x 0.2 = €5,630
Total = €28,098

But I've gone too low on the sterling rate of 86.5p, and I put the OMSP as 92% of RRP. If I used 90p and 90% it comes out at €27,100

It's going to come down to the exchange rate for me - I'm buying in April - I'd have to save a lot to justify to get around the warranty issues. With a TSI, ACC and possibly DSG there's a lot to go wrong. I'd say a dealer would take one look at the speedo in MPH and tell me to f off back to Belfast!

Your car looks good. I am considering a 1.4 TSI or 2.0 TDI; would be interested in your comments on the 1.4 eg performance, refinement, economy etc. Can you detect when the car switches from supercharger to turbo?
