Newbie with a candy white Roc
Newbie with a candy white Roc
New (white) Rocco owner needing a little help:
Previously I had a silver Golf GT (ok, it was a workhorse - clean but not pampered if honest).
Just got my new Roc (OK, when I get it back from the garage - don't ask :-( ) and have in the past have mainly used AG products and whatever shampoo was in the cupboard.
When I first got the car I used the following:
Turtlewax Zipwax wash / wax (2 bucket method)
Autoglym Super Resin Polish (1 coat bodywork, 2 on the wheels)
Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection (although not massively impressed with any difference on top of SRP)
Turtlewax trim clean for the textured bumpers etc.
Several microfibre cloths (ASDA £2 for 6 cheapos)
After reading these forums have since bought a pot of FK Sealant from autoperfection - as living on a new estate (read: brick dust in air) would like to keep the paintwork as good as possible. Not tried it yet as car not back yet...
I'm happy to spend say 3-4 hours on it once a month, and an hour on it once a week - should I be looking after the car with any other products? (Budget fairly limited ish).
Also any tips on using the stuff I've got better appreciated. I've spent a few hours combing these forums so anything CW specific would be great.
Cheers
Mark

you've probably got pretty much all the bases covered there mark, personally i think the FK sealant would be better used on the wheels than the SRP
i'd say use what you've got, get an idea on what you want in a product, read reviews on what else is out there & then you will know what you are wanting next time you need to stock up, thats what i'm trying to do

Re: Newbie with a candy white Roc
I'm in a similar position. Picked up my Candy White last Saturday and haven't touched it yet cleaning wise. When i knew i was getting white i spent quite a bit time doing research on detailingworld. After reading many posts and looking at various results on white i have come to the conclusion the Jeffs Werstat Acrylic range is the one for me.
I'll get myself some ordered when i'm home later this week. I'm planning on spending a full day giving it the once over when the stuff arrives.

Thanks trix!
Got a wash mitt (Asda microfibre job) but need a second for the wheels I guess.
The SRP on the wheels was a recommendation from the salesman (who I also bought my Golf from - before I realised what really looking after my car meant) - but in the short term seems to help on the wheels... after NOT looking after the golf to begin with the wheels were a nightmare!
Now just need to get my Roc back! (OK it's fairly basic compared to a lot of the cars on here - but it feels brill every time I get in it!)

Re: Newbie with a candy white Roc
get it back? wheres it gone?
hmm
fk sealant is a high temp sealant so perfect for use on the wheels, the srp should really be used with the egp to offer higher protection levels, product explanations from Autoglym..

Autoglym Super Resin Polish is the ultimate easy to use combination cleaner, polish and sealant.
imo on wheels you really need as higher levels of protection as possible due to the nature of them being so close to the road & dirtAutoglym Extra Gloss Protection is an extra tough, protective sealant that contains a complex blend of hard resins and waxes. Treated surfaces are protected with a super-tough finish to keep paintwork looking brilliant for longer.

I've got CW also, I bought some FK 1000p after reasearching on detailing world and really impressed with it. Especially on the wheels, lasts ages. To be honest, it's quite difficult getting any kind of depth on white, but i did get some poorboys white diamond glaze, that made a bit of difference. I use the FK 1000p on the body, as waxes I tried didn't offer any noticable difference and the FK lasts much longer.
Re: Newbie with a candy white Roc
It's back at the dealer - only had it 2 weeks / 450 miles and the amber Engine warning light came on. I thought it was down on power (from 3.5k up) from new. The road test with the VW assistance guy (plugged into his comp) showed the (turbo) boost pressure dropped away drastically at 3480.trix wrote:get it back? wheres it gone?
They've had it since Monday and between themselves and VW technical they can't decide on the fault.
I'm driving around at the minute in a grey VW assistance provided Golf 1.6 TDi (90)... it's not as bad as I thought performance wise! (Based on this last sentence, my 'Roc must really have been sick!
It's a disappointing start with the car... can't wait to get it back (healthy)!

Re: Newbie with a candy white Roc
i have been doing a lot of ameteur-detailing as well.
for the wheels i took them all off and used a wheel sealant ( small pot of paste) and applied it with the same technique as hard wax.
its hard work because i was jacking the car up corner by corner. I have done it in april and it makes cleaning the wheel a lot easier. No need for hard brush, just wipe it with a microfibre. I am expect to do it again sometime before winter sets in, to give it another of layer of protection.
with car drying, try to get a thick microfibre with the fibres about 1cm long. The bigger the better, because you can just put in on the roof say, and just press it gently. The water will get absorbed. If you wipe it around, any dust will from the air may scratch the surface.
finally, get a bottle of quick detailer to clean small areas, or bird poo just 2 hrs after you washed the car!

... I have a pellet gun to take care of the birds as a preventative measure!
More seriously, thanks for the good avice. Just got the Roc back from VW today and it scared the hell out of me now it works how quickly it can get you into trouble (even coming from a golf 2.0 GT TDi 140)...!
Edit: just received the FK1000 from autoperfection (thumbs up on the packing & recycling going on there!) and looking forward to treating my car to it tomorrow!

Re: Newbie with a candy white Roc
OK it's October before I replied to this thread but thought it was really worthwhile...
Firstly the FK1000 is brilliant. Manchester's worst washes off with a noodle mitt nice and easily! Even when left abandoned for a month in various airport car parks (the flights home are always looking forward to driving my Roc!). I've worked it in to my other half's KA and it's working a treat there as well.
The 18" Inters are proving really easy to keep clean compared to my worst fears.... a run over with the mitt and a dry with a poundland towel keeps them looking great! Not sure about the AG Tyre shine which dries milky though.
Will post up a couple of pics when we get a sunny day (so that'll be next year then)...
6 months in and still loving my Roc. The 32 mpg compared to my TDi 140 hurts a little still....
