MP3 player connection problems

Post by monkeyman »

I hope somebody can help me if this hasn't been posted before.

Ive just decided to try and use my MP3 player in the USB connection in the arm rest. However when I plug it in it plays for a split second (displaying the track/Album info) then stops saying DEV W/OUT FUNCTION. Ive read the handbook and its not very helpfull, so I done the normal thing of unpluging it, blowing into it but to no avail. Is it the player, the connection wire or the stero system itself. As i pluged the player into my computer a couple weeks ago to put some music onto it so its up to date. Its also loaded up with WMA files but it says the car can play them.

Has anybody else had this problem or know of a salution as computers are not my thing. I also know about the ipod thing and going to take a trip up the the dealers soon to have an agrument about picking up a free cable.

Many thanks.

firstly some obivous questions that will inevitably come up...
1) have you tried a different mp3 player/USB in the car?
2) have you tried your mp3 player in another car?
3) have you played around with any of the trim around that area (installed the covered cup holder, played with the dock etc)
4) have you pushed the plug firmly in (I know you probably have but i'm just checking)
5) is the dock firmly in the armrest? (the connector has a plug underneath that may have come loose)

I'd suggest the first port of call then is take out the dock & check the plug underneath is in securely (see RW1's post here on how to remove the dock)

THe only thing is it plays the song for a split second and then stops. And sometimes it holds the song info. Mite bug VW about it when I go and pick up my ipod cable.

Probably this ^^^^^^ My Sony mp3 goes into 'do not disconnect'/charging mode but as I can see the song title on screen/dash anyway it's nee bother and works fine. I have copied all my music from an SD Card now onto the HDD drive anyway, ne need for a plug in unless my lass wants her i-pod music on.

 I have not experienced other systems I'm afraid, I only know about the RNS 510, others may be able to assist.

no you don't have a memory to load songs on to monkeyman. have you tried a usb stick with music on it? this will tell you if its your mp3 player or the car

Just a 4 meg' one off e-bay for less than a £10 iirc. Holds more than enough music too.

- what mp3 player are you trying to use? ipod/usb based/aux connection
- if usb: try a usb stick with music on it in your car to see if that works
- if ipod how old as the early ones don't work
- as you say you've messed around with the trim in that area; see above for removing the dock & checking all the plugs are in securely
- if you have taken delivery of your car your profile should be changed to 'i drive a' rather than 'i have ordered a'

Hi all,
I've also had the DEV W/OUT FUNCTION error intermittently using my iPod Nano.
It crops up on occasion, despite the iPod being attached and working previously. It's the process of swapping from DAB or FM that cases it in my instance.

So ....
1) have you tried a different mp3 player/USB in the car? Yes - Another iPod - same result
2) have you tried your mp3 player in another car?Yes - but not enough for it to happen again.
3) have you played around with any of the trim around that area (installed the covered cup holder, played with the dock etc)No
4) have you pushed the plug firmly in (I know you probably have but i'm just checking)Yes
5) is the dock firmly in the armrest? (the connector has a plug underneath that may have come loose)Yes

I often get a problem where the track display isn't in sync with the song playing. It realigns on subsequent tracks, or if one is reloaded, and it's not down to any particular playlist or track order type.

I'm sure there is a problem with data transfer between the USB/iPod interface and the head unit.....
