New car
Black GT 140 TDI arrvied Friday. Lovely car, diesel is a bit too quiet after the rattle and surge of the 140 PD in my old golf which I loved. Any specific do's / don'ts and things I need to be aware of with the car, quirks etc ?
Thanks
Neil

Re: New car
Hi Neil and welcome to the forum
Glad to see you're enjoying the car and if you stick to the running in guide in the handbook you should be fine. I've done nearly 10,000 miles in my tdi140 since November and it's not missed a beat.
For reference, this post would be better off in the 'Delivery Room' section of the forum. Not a criticism but bare in mind there are specific sections next time you post, I'm sure a moderator will move this one.

Re: New car

Re: New car
I really like the power from it. If found that it also seems to have improved as it's been run it and the engine has loosened up. Don't get me wrong, it's not tire screeching all the way to 60 but it's very torquey and you get a good surge of power in second and third. It's not as rapid when climbing above 70 though and acceleration in the top gears is where is ultimately lacks the grunt of the 170.
Having said all that, I came from a 10 year old 1.4 petrol VW Polo so it's does appear quick to me and I couldn't be more impressed with it's 0-60 time especially when I can relatively easily average nearly or over 70mpg.

Re: New car
Thanks for the replies. Still missing the 1750 rpm shove from the Golf PD but the way it picks up speed creeps up on you - notice acceleration from the speedo more from via the senses - still keeping it gentle for the first 1000 miles, and hope it will loosen up some more. About 58-59mpg on a trip to Cornwall this weekend and we didn't hang about. Only saw one other Scirocco in 4 days, unlike those spilitscreens everywhere.

Re: New car
Running in - just get some varying conditions (e.g. don't go on a 300 mile motorway run to put some miles on) and keep the engine speed below 3500rpm for the first 650 miles (1000km) and you shouldn't burn much oil between services. Mine has 11k miles on it now and hasn't needed a top up, unlike my 140 TDI PD Golf which took a litre of oil every 4000 miles (was run in on a 700 mile round trip to see my parents). The 170 TDI PD Golf (last car) was run in on varying conditions and that also didn't use a drop.
You will find the common rail (CR) unit has a more linear power curve than the PD units - less of a 1750rpm surge.
Mine hits 80mph from around 30mph onto a sliproad near my house at the same marker (a sign post) as my 170 Golf did, the old 140 PD hit 70mph at the same point. I'd say that excluding 5th and 6th acceleration, there's not a great deal of difference between the 140CR and 170PD except much greater refinement in the CR.
My car has loosened up a little in the time i've had it, but not massively, my economy certainly hasn't greatly improved, although you will see a 10% difference between winter and summer economy. on a 40 mile trip at a constant 80mph I can get 57mpg, but generally get around 48mpg around the doors.

Re: New car
Ashley - is that a typo or can you really average 70mpg? I think it must be a typo - that's blue-motion territory. Someone who does a lot of motorway miles could expect a 55mpg average, but 70mpg seems a little optimistic unless you've ripped out the whole interior, filled the back with helium balloons and drive like a nun.

Nope, not a typo. See here:

I've also got a few images of the MFD reading 74.7 but unfortunately they came out a bit too blurry. But yes, it's certainly possible!

Re: New car
I suspect it is possible really makes so much different on your driving techniques. I went to California for a holiday this year and rented a Ford Mustang for 2.5 weeks. Me and my mate had a challenge and see what the best consumption we could get over 100 miles and managed to get 29.4MPG doing about 60-70 on the highways, I think thats pretty amazing for an American muscle car. But just normal driving went to 15-20MPG or so.
