Grinding rear brakes?

Post by woodward182 »

Has anyone noticed there rear pads and discs starting to grind at low speed after 20,000 miles?

There's a slight lip on the disc and the pads look fine??

Mine do it after 6K, really annoying

Been back to the dealers and they said its a buld up up brake dust and advised me to do some heavy braking (but not on a busy road :shake: )

I think the brakes are very sensitive (1.4) which deters from heavy braking and I do a lot of round town driving. There was a thread on here (or another forum) re this a while back.

My BM does it from time to time also, but tends to cure itself after a while. I will see what happens

Mine too. Should this not be fixed under warranty?
My previous BMW had the same problem, although also including squeaking noises - this was fixed under warranty.

Same noise here, started around 5k. Can be temporarily cured by gently pulling up the handbrake for 2-3 seconds when driving slowly. Guess it's a small ridge of rust that just needs to be removed. It's a similar noise to applying the brakes after the car has been washed or rain has got onto the discs. It shouldn't be there and is slightly annoying, will get the dealer to take a look at first service or maybe sooner if there's other faults to look at. The only other faults I have so far in 8 months / 11k are something loose inside the boot struts, but you only hear that when you open / close the hatch, and a slight rattle at 2000-2500rpm that has been covered on other posts so I'd rather keep hold of my car and drive it than leave it at the stealers for a day.

Mine did it from almost new. I took it back to the dealers and they changed discs and pads under warranty.

Started again though recently, approx 2000 miles after change.

Its brake dust, just stamp on the brake pedal and it will clear it.

Started on my 2009 GT about two weeks after I bought it (14K miles on clock). Can hear quiet scraping under light braking at <5mph once road noise stops masking it.
Local dealer said it is brake glazing, not covered under warranty. I am still within 30 day grace period so I will ask dealer I bought it from if they will do something about it.
(I already tried several hard stops, and mild handbrake appliance at slow speed.)

Don't let it bother you too much as it faded when I reached 20k and now it's very faint

Resurrecting this thread after a quick search as I am now getting the same issue after only 4,000 miles on the clock.

It's very noticeable when coming to a halt/when braking at low speeds.

Going to try some heavy braking, but we'll see what happens.

Anyone else had this on their car recently?

I have it after the Scirocco has been stood a few days (always outside). It doesn't dissappear if I just lightly brake. Heavier/firm braking clears it until its been stood again. Combination of rusting and the brake proportioning front/rear. Had it on other cars if rain gets on the discs.

yep mine is doing it when i brake but just before a complete stop, dealer says they couldnt hear it and anyway wouldnt be covered as its 'wear and tear' but the brakes are not worn...........
had it out with them but they wouldnt budge.
faults so far
1, clutch judder (new clutch)
2, missfire (software update)
3, headlights inop (new wiper stalk)
4, rattle from steering column
5, rattle from drivers door (new window reg to be fitted)
6, rattle from handbrake lever
7, rattle from above your head somewhere
8, tailgate rattle (cable loose inside tailgate)
9, poor fuel economy

might just remove the pads myself and do a proper job and put the exhaust and new wheels on at the same time
