Auto headlights not working

Post by shoredogg »

Recently my auto headlights have been coming on main beam in broad daylight? I'm just wondering if it is a problem with the car or is it because somethings covering the sensors and making the car think that it is dark? Does anyone know where the sensors are for the headlights? and would the sensors get confused if say the car was dirty and confusing the sensors into thinking it is dark? Also does anyone else get annoyed by the daytime running lights? Sometimes if im parked up with my ignition on i don't want any lights on but im forced to have my drl's on!

I would appreciate any advice

Many thanks

the sensor is in the bit that attaches the windscreen behind the rear view mirror.

from the outside you'll see what looks like 2 bubbles. they are light/dusk sensors.

ps: how fast were you going when the lights came on? on Auto it will come on if you go over a certain speed.

my old GTI used to come on when i thought its still too bright...and sometimes when its bit dark im thinking why are you not triggering? strange.

Hello

It's not when im going a certain speed. It's literally all the time as soon as i start the car they come on, even in bright daylight. I might try cleaning the windscreen just incase there is dirt over the sensors but i doubt this is the problem as i recently had the car valeted. I think it might need a trip back to the VW garage.

Is that not the DRL's?

Shoredog,

This sounds faulty to me. The Auto Headlights should not come on in bright light conditions. Oh and... your windscreen would have to be thick with dirt for it to kid the sensors.

I'd defo take it back to a VW dealer and get it fixed. I'm hoping they solve it for you without quibble.

Lastly, my last car (mk5 Golf) had overly sensitive Auto Headlights that used to drive me crazy. So it could be quite a common problem.

yes if you dont have xenon headlights you dont get seperate drls so your headlights on coulds well be the drls

a way to check this is start the car in bright weather headlights prob come on, if the rear lights are off its drl on only.

hope this helps :)

I've seen a few rocs with standard (halogen) lights with the back lights on during the day. As said by others the headlights are used as the DRL's, but can someone confirm whether the back lights are linked to come on as well? I know in mine (xenon's) they don't but I'm just curious. Other manufacturers (BMW for one) also turn on the rear lights when DRL's are on, so I'm wondering what combinations of lights / DRL's are out there on the rocs.

Sounds like DRL's to me. Easy way to test, turn it to "0" which is off [left of auto] and if your headlights are still on then its DRL's. Back lights should also be on if it is Halogen and not Xenon as mentioned above.

When I got mine (build week 46) my headlights we on all the time even if switched to the 0 position. Sounds like the new DLR issue. If you know someone with VAGCOM they can be switched off so that they work like proper auto headlights.

At what speed would the Auto Lights come on even in bright day light?

Yes, so you have to remember to tell the nice Motorway cop that you had yours adjusted to come on at 69 mph.

Seen this on a number of 2010 'rocs and golfs around town. Dipped beam on when the switch is set to: 0, Auto or headlights on. They only go off when I set the switch to sidelights (which turns the interior dash lights on).
