Loud click when I pull away in first

Post by coldel »

Read a few threads about clicks etc but not the one I think I have. First gear, a few revs and pulling away in first I get a loud click from the front. I dont get it when at low revs and in higher gears on the move, is this normal?

It's not on mine.

But I do hear the Supercharger magntic clutch click in (more a short clunk), but that's not just at the setting off point I hear it. (plus the infamous chirp!)

No chirp as of yet and 1200 miles in, just that loud click as I bring the clutch up (manual gear), always noticed it pulling away, maybe turn the stereo down long enough to hear if it goes when driving normally but pretty sure it doesnt.

Does it only make the noise when you pull away past 15mph after a door has been closed?? If so its the automatic door locking engaging, although it does only make the click once untill a door is opened again.

3 things I can think of then, it a dodgy thrust bearing-the input shaft is loose or has a knackered bearing-or worst case is the syncromesch/selector on 1st gear is out of alighment slightly.

Does it change depending on whether you're on a hill or not? It could be something to do with the hill hold control? (assuming you have it fitted)

I dont have it fitted and my guess it hill hold is an automatic handbrake that only releases when enough torque is reached to pull the car forward. My guess is its something to do with the gearbox and its only in 1st gear. And you dont realy used the cluch once the vehicle is moving only needing to full depress it when engaging 1st gear while stationary.

No hill control, just the basic 6 speed manual gearbox. Thinking I should call the dealer and see what they can do...just wanted to confirm that it isnt a normal noise and I was being paranoid.

I think I've just developed a similar problem in the TDI 140. Usually, but not always, when I'm pulling away from a standstill, there's a short, but fairly loud 'clunk' from the front of the car just after I start moving. I tried pulling away in second just to check and it still happened. It doesn't affect the feel of the car at all; I'm not aware of it through the pedals or steering, but it's definitely not normal.

Still less than 5,000 miles on the clock ...it took me 40,000 to trash the clutch on my Golf...
