engine fault maybe?

Post by roccosiffredi »

Hi all.

Just noticed today at idle revs (just under 1000) my engine seems to be 'misfiring' slightly.

It is a diesel so not sure misfiring is the correct term.....but that's exactly what it feels like.

The car seems shake ever so slightly when stood still at idle. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Mine sits just below 1000 revs so i think that is normal although mine doesnt shake at all. In 4th at 30mph the rev counter is just over 1000, seems to tick over nicely!

Cheers gavmac. Yeah mine ticks over at just below 1000 (always has done). The 'shake' started today...it is very noticeable....kind of a jerky movement.

Press the gas pedal and it goes. If it doesn't spontaneously resolve i will give my local dealers a call and see what they say.

Read some horror stories on other forums about cars with similar problems. Everything from knacked engine management units, dodgy flywheels, split clutch casings, faulty air filters.......nightmare! I hope not.

My mate had a similar problem with his Honda Civic Diesel and it turned out to be a faulty injector. He'd not had it long and had covered very few miles.

It's worth running it in to the dealers if you're concerned and let them do some diagnostics on it.
.... I smile because I have no idea of what's going on ....

Roccossifredi: Does it do this all the time, or just sometimes (maybe a few times a week)?

It could be that you're going through a DPF (Diesel Particulates Filter) regeneration. My TDI idles at 800rpm normally, but just under 1000rpm when there's a DPF regeneration going on (about once a fortnight for me). During the DPF regen, the idling is a little "lumpier" than normal.

How often you need a DPF regen depends upon how you drive your car. If you have a lot of stop-start city traffic in your day-to-day journeys then it'll happen more often. To do a passive regen you'll need to be doing 1800-2500rpm at motorway speeds for 10 mins to burn off the accumulated contents of the DPF.

I spotted this on mine the other morning. It was the first time it's done it & didn't last very long. I had assumed it was the DPF regeneration (as maisbitt has mentioned) as there was no other noticeable difference in performance etc...

I think you might be right about the PDF thing. My typical day is full of around town stop-start journey's. I gave it a good thrash on a nice stretch of dual carriageway (way in excess of the national speed limit....in fact i was suprised it went so fast- if rozzers had have spotted me i'd have been banned!).

This morning the problem has gone. Running as smooth as a babies bottom once more.
