R Tyres

Post by Paul Denney »

Hi, still 6 weeks until my Rising Blue R arrives. The first shipment of 15 cars for NZ has just landed. I am wondering what tyres mine will be supplied with as so far I have seen:

Several on Continental Sport Contact 2's ( I had these as std on my 2005 GTI) I wownder if the Sport Contact 3's are a newer ( ie better tyre)?

A couple on Dunlop Sport Maxx GT ( My prev Scirocco 2.0 TSI ( NZ did not use the GT badge, had Dunlop Sport 01)

One on Pirelli P Zero

None on Bridgestone's as yet.

What are you guys getting on yours? I would have thought that VW for the R would have selected say the 2 best make of tyres that suited the car, rather than several tyre brands.

Would appreciate your opinions.

Have only seen 1 R on the road in NZ so far, more Golf R's about. Although to my mind it does not on first glance look much different that a std golf TSI, which is a shame to my mind given that fully optioned in NZ you are looking at the thick end of 80K, the Roc is 3k cheaper.

Cheers

The Potenza's wear fairly fast and also..... the 33psi on mine is too high causing middle tread area tyre wear rate as "running" inflation pressure changes more than I'd expect 33 to 38/39 psi. 2mm gone in 2,000 miles. Ride was hard as a noticeable effect.

Dropped mine from 33psi to 30 - 31psi all round. Check wear rate yesterday and it's stopped in the centre area of the tread. Ride is better and a LOT quieter. (Know it's a different set up Scirocco wise but the 1.4 has the same tyres apart from speed/loading adjustments for R!)

The 33psi is for the 18's think they say 38psi for the 19's.
but your right my detailer pointed it out to me the otherday

can see only the middle picked up dust, though it was dealer had not checked tyre pressures.

I found a automated air pressure machine and set it to the 38 psi it says, thank for the heads up I'll check again just to make sure.

My tank flap (1.4TSi standard label) for 19's says for front & rear - 33psi - half load. Its the same for all wheel/tyres 17's, 18's & 19's. Only goes to 36psi front/ 42psi rear if full load on board.

Mine were overinflated to 40 psi on delivery. Reckon dealer hadn't checked and thats what the factory set them to.

I've made sure they are not still over inflated from factory and set as advised, I'll keep a close eye on them as per your advice :)

The tyre pressure depends on what engine you have. On my 122ps I should have 2,1bar in front and rear for a normal load and 2,3 front and 2,7 rear for a heavy load. On the 200ps engine, the suggested pressure is higher by 0,2bar. Seems to be the same with the R.
