Light steering

Post by Algoz66 »

Don't know if it's my imagination, but my steering doesn't feel as tight as it should. It is really only noticeable when driving in a straight line on motorways at speed. I find I'm having to constantly make adjustments to the steering and it sometimes feels like there is a "null zone" where I move the wheel but I dont' feel a resistance unless I turn it a little more....anyone else noticed this? May just be a feature of the car, I don't know??
All other situations are fine - cornering, reversing, no judder on bumpy roads/ no wheel wobble or anything like that.

I've tried switching to Sport and to nothing, and it makes no difference.

I'm just beginning to wonder whether it might have anything to do with the REVO remap I had done?? Could the additional power/BHP/torque have an affect on the handling of the car at cruise speeds??

The exact opposite of my situation: http://www.sciroccocentral.co.uk/forum/ ... =25&t=4423" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Maybe there is something general with the steering - or maybe Scirocco drivers are a little sensitive...

Having read your original post, I do detect some of the things you say - like a resistance, and then some slack. It can be quite disconcerting at times and it seems like the car is heading in the direction it wants, then I have to apply a little pressure to bring it back....glad I'm not the only one. :?

I am wondering whether it has something to do with my tyres? Currently I am using winter tyres - 235/17. I haven't noticed the problem on my summer tyres, but I only used them for a few months (got my roc in sept09)

On mine, the 235 / 45/ 17's are OK - constant turning effort and rock solid in the centre, don't experience any of the points you've raise. Tyres Bridgestone Potenza's.

You've not bumped a kerb or hit a deep potholes sometime back with one of the front wheels/tyres??? I've had "other" cars in the past where the tracking was not quite right (ie, toeing out slightly more than factory settings limits). I had the vagarities described in the first post around the centre position but was heavier once out of the centre straight ahead position. When it was adjusted to toe in a little more and be within factory settings, all was as expected.

Good point - I do remember hitting a pothole a few weeks back - maybe the tracking has gone out? Would I have to take it to VW for inspection/correction?

Dealers should have the steering geometry equipment and of course the correct settings information to check.

If the pothole incident was "real bad", then it may have pushed that wheel slightly back relative to the other side as well. So it's not just a tracking check.

(Had a Mk2 Scirocco where it hit a kerb at 30 mph and pushed the left wheel back relative to the right side but tracking was still spot on.)

Well, I completed a 260 mile journey to Blackpool today with the "comfort" setting ACC turned off. The problem has disappeared. It seems like chassis roll was contrbuting to the problem.
