Auto lights function

Post by Snooky »

Hi all.

I bought my car privately in November last year. The lights were set to 'Auto' and I left well enough alone....I noticed that they were on low beam pretty much all of the time but it has been a really bad winter up here in Scotland! Now that we have had a couple of really bright sunny days I notice that my Auto lights are still on all the time. Is this normal?

I'm not bothered too much and can obviously switch them off but my wife's B8 Audi A4 seems to be more perceptive - in darker conditions the headlights come on, in bright conditons only the LED daytime running fairy lights come on.

Anyone else notice this with their Roc?

Cheers

Yes.
It's the daytime running lights.

Depending on when the car was made you can turn them off yourself

Hi John

these will be the daytime running lights which when turned on effectively negate the 'auto' function, random yes we know, you will find that if you turn the switch to off (0) they will still be on if the DRL (daytime running lights) is active.

to turn the DRL's off it will depend how old the car is; if its a 58 plate or an early 09 (before mid may build) plate with standard halogens you will need vagcom to turn them off instructions here,
if it has the above plates & xenons or late 09 plate & early 59 plate (up to mid nov build) you can use the indicator stalk method here
59 plates built after mid nov require vagcom to turn them off but we do not have any screen shots for this instruction currently

Once you have turned off the DRL's the lights will work pretty much as expected, 0 - off, Auto - automatic in dim light conditions, sidelights, dipped

Hope that helps

worth noting even if your daytime running lights are disabled and on the auto setting the lights do come on after certain 'cough' speeds

Would said speeds be 'point scoring' in the UK then?

Thanks for all the responses folks. I will check if the result is the same with the switch in '0' position - I'm guessing from the knowledgeable responses on here it will be. Not sure why Inever thought about daytime running lights.....I guess on my previous car, an E92 335i, the DRL's were the equivalent to sidelights - I thought on the Roc the sidelights just above the fogs would have been the DLR's.

Anyhow thanks for the responses. My car is an 09 plate first registered in Aug 09 (with halogens) but I think it might have been built in May. I'll have a think about whether I want to switch them off. If the lights were a whiter colour I would be happier to leave them on...maybe I'll change the bulbs

sounds like you may have just slipped into the indicator method crowd so worth giving it a go & you just reverse the process to turn them back on

Just had a service and asked for DRL's to be turned off. On pickup said they couldn't turn them off on a 58 plate :grumpy:

Hants Man, you need to fine someone with vag com (maybe a friendly near by member or a tuner) and can then get then switched off. Had mine done while my lowering springs were being fitted.

There appear to be changes after Wk45/09 which prevent the stalk method initially. You might try first turning them off using the VAG-COM method, then they can be turn on/off using the indicator switch method.

Thank you RW1. I'll try again. I guess the VAGCOM is a dealer thing?

I wouldn't mind if it was just my sidelights that were permanently on, but it seems daft to have all my lights blazing, and kinda makes the light switch rather redundant

No, they use their own VW systems. ANd will most likely not do it for you based on past experiences of most who have tried.
