I'm in a bit of a dilema as the VAT increase will be paid by VW if the car is registered before 28 Feb. But with a delivery so close to the 1 Mar plate change I'm wondering whether I should hang on. Trouble is it will cost me £500!

Registrations from March 1st will be 10 plate
Bookie, will you have to pay the increased VAT for a March delivery?

The chap at the dealership told me I was "exempt from the price increase" (2.7% that comes into affect jan 1st). I'm not sure whether he meant the VAT increase as well though. It's a good point and will try and ring the salesman about it next week.
If you ordered before a certain date (sometime in November'09 iirc) then that's when I think VW stand the 2.5% VAT increase. If your order is confirmed and the dealer has placed the order at the factory and has a "Commision Number" allocated then you have secured the price before the price increases that is due in the new year.
It's when you buy the car in full that the final price is governed by the prevailing VAT rate. In any situation it is 17.5% VAT on/after 1st January 2010. And that's what you will pay but if you qualify as above, VW (UK) will give a refund equivalent to the 2.5% VAT increase because they have failed to deliver in a reasonable timescale. This is why some people who ordered before 30th November plus reasonable delivery time are now to get compensation cos their Scirocco is late, relative to that acceptable period.
This is the VW (UK) announcement......... still on the VW (UK) website today.
"Concerned about the VAT increase?
It's predicted that on the 1st January 2010 VAT is going to increase to from 15% to 17.5% . Volkswagen have created an offer to help minimise the impact of this increase on the on the final price you'll pay for your vehicle when it is delivered.
If you order a new Volkswagen before the 30th November 2009 and take delivery before the 1st January and 28th February 2010, we will give you a 2.5% discount on the pre VAT basic recommended retail price or the vehicle including factory fitted options."

I note VW state you need to take delivery by 28 Feb 2010 and not registered. Probably a long shot but I wonder if you paid and in my case hand over my part ex in Feb and either got the dealer to store the car till 1 Mar or deliver it to home (off the road) and not drive it till 1Mar you could still get the VW 2.5% discount.

guys i've split this into a new topic as i'm sure the closer we get to the end of feb the more people will be asking this very question & it will very likely get lost in 37+ pages...
I haven't read through everything here but i had a similar dilemma.
I live in Aberdeen due to work but am originally from N.Ireland where my parents still live. I ended up ordering my car from a dealer in NI due to a the VW salesman being an old friend and giving me a very good deal. In NI, new cars are registered from 1st Jan. and I was told delivery would be about week 48 so I decided to hold onto after 1st Jan so I could get it registered as 2010. I was also worried about the VAT increase but I called the salesman and he was happy for me to pay the balance at 15% VAT in December and still hold off to 1st Jan to get it registered.
Upshot is that the car is fully paid for at 15% VAT and I will be picking it up next week registered as 2010. It's be a struggle waiting the last few weeks since it got delivered but I know it'll be worth it in the long run when it comes to selling my car.

hmm i'm still dubious of dealers doing this as the VAT is applied upon invoicing which (as i understand it) can not be done without a VIN number and registration mark

S
maybe the deal to take 2.5% from VW UK includes NI so the dealer isnt actually losing anything and gets a nice end of year bonus to help his cashflow out?

VW Customer Services have informed me that my build week is confirmed as Week 5.
Is there any likelyhood my dealer will get the car before the end of Feb?
I have today received a call from my dealer with both good and bad news.
To cut a longer story short, my car will be ready at the dealers next week, to I have already verbally agreed I will have it on 1st March on a '10 plate. I was today told that it is on the boat (although I already new it arrived on the boat on Saturday) and the dealer seemed supprised when I reminded him that we had agreed I would collect it on 1st March.
After a lengthy phone conversation with the manager, they are basically saying that i have to have it before 1 March because of the VAT increase, unless i want to pay the additional VAT. This has really annoyed me, firstly because of our verbal agreement and secondly as if i would really want a 59 plate for literally a few days prior to the '10 plates being on the road when I have had to wait 5 months for a not so cheap £25k car.
I have spoken with VW CS who basically said that I would have to take it up with my dealer.
There will be further conversations with my dealer tomorrow.....

Sounds like they may have possibly tried to get things moving quickly just to shift stock out of the way ...sounds like they may of already registered the car as a 59 plate and are now sweating as i believe there should be no problems with waiting until the 1st march as long as you pay the VAT.

Yeah they probably need to meet their sales quota or something (a salesman at arnold clark said these were worth more to them than the profit of each car they sell though not sure I believe him)
Going to be sorting out my finance with my dealer on Saturday so will see what they reckon to the whole VAT thing. Suspect they will be the same though
Well, I have been to the dealers and got no further. It was basically left that nothing could be done with the VAT even though I had a cunning plan up my sleeve with regard to shifting a few figures around on the invoice. In the end, I had to concede and will be collecting it on Saturday on a 59 plate, after pushing them to get it ready for the weekend. It arrives at the dealers tomorrow.
I think there may be some truth in the sales quota or registration, as the number appeared whislt I was there. Whether the number was assigned whilst I was there i dont know, but hey ho, all done and dusted now.
As marriedblonde says, at least I can start enjoying my car a week earlier now, which is a plus, but I am and I made it clear to my dealer dissapointed with them and the situation.
