I've come from years of Subarus, and Evo's and not having any options to choose from except the colour, and even that choice was poor So the Roc was rather tough, and I am continually changing my mind: nightmare, c'est la vie
A lot of garages seem to have a business overdraft to finance their pool of stock. If you can come up with a substantial deposit - 50% of the car price is good and chunky - you might be able to persuade them that paying a big lump up front will reduce their overdraft by £10/12K etc for the number of months you are waiting for the car. With bank lending rates exceeding deposit rates by 5%/7%/9% or more, do the maths. You aren't going to lose much interest from your deposit account (paying 0.5% if you're lucky?) whereas £12K in their hands for three months could reduce their borrowing costs by £360 which they could pass on to you in the form of a lower car price. Longer delivery date means more savings from them holding your cash.
Some problems with this though:
1 - some salesmen cannot cope with the logic behind it;
2 - you need to have accumulated that level of cash to bargain with;
3 - Sod's Law says that you try this at a dealer with a good bank balance of their own.
Might be worth a shot if you are on good terms with the sales team.
(Yes, the things you can think up while you wait for your 'Roc.....)

Yep, I quite agree on that point ZephyR - hadn't considered that possibility.
My trust in this idea is based on my local dealership being part of a multi-outlet and multi-brand group, rather than a single-shop franchise, plus a track record with my 'Roc being VW number five purchased over the past thirteen years. Anyways, when I floated the idea with the salesman, he declined to take me up on it - £1000 deposit was enough for him.

Dixon Motors were a massive multi outlet multi franchise group. They went into administration overnight a few years ago and were still taking customer deposits until the night before. If you must pay a large deposit then use a credit card to ensure you're covered in the event of company collapse.
Just to update you, after a drawn out 2 hour negotiation with my local dealer I secured an excellent deal (armed with the info provided via this forum) and ordered a 1.4 TSI 160 in white with a 6-8 week delivery date. Went for a test drive and wow!! that thing pulls like a freakin train!

6-8 weeks thats ace! i haven't ordered yet but my dealer told me that the wait was much longer than that! how much did you get off the price?
