ROC Replacement - what to get?

Well the ROC has to go. I did almost have a deal on a BMW recently but that fell through, so back to square one. Reason is purely changing from 10k miles a year to 24k+ a year. Petrol prices and 30MPG average is killing my pocket. Need a diesel. I have debated keeping but...

Bought car 12 months ago, ex-demo 2.0T with 3k on it, leather, sunfoof and a GT spec with DSG. Cost was 20k. Due to limited production, demand and increases.. I can get 18.5k to 19k back (trade-in) from my local dealer. That is with 25k miles on it!! That is a very small amount of depreciation considering! Will the situation be the same again in a year? VERY unlikely. Now would be a good time to move it on.

Problem is what to get? Something with a hatch (compromise required because I am a drummer, so saloon boot no good for me!), with a diesel that is automatic. At least 170BHP (would prefer more). With leather, heated seats + bluetooth and IPhone integration.

Had a look at a VW Golf Mk6 GTD. Lovely car but not exciting/dynamic enough. It's certainly not as entertaining as the Roc (and I have driven the 170 Roc) and at 25.5k, a lot of money for what is "just a golf" really. Doesn't feel special enough for such big money. Wish I could find a 170 DSG Roc somewhere!

So any suggestions?

1 series? seriously ugly in all variants, more so with the hatchback than any other (looking like a van), the overly thick sill is the biggest culprit in the general ugliness. Not built like a BMW, nasty brittle plastic all over inside. The M could be a lot of fun though, although the point of this thread is to suggest something economical for S8N, not something any "M" BMW is synonymous with.

Maybe a 3 series 320D or 323D?

I agree that the GTD is a complete rip off - massively overpriced when compared to the MK5 Golf GT Sport 170TDI it replaced, for a few superficial differences (GTI style seats, slightly better alloys and few other instantly forgettable small things), and the MK5 GT Sport stood out more against the standard Golf than the GTD/GTI does.

Everything's pricey now - VAG has increased prices massively over the last year, with the weak pound. We used to pay 20% more than the continentals when it was 1.40+ euros to the pound, but recently we've been paying a bit less than the Germans, and they want to correct that!

What about Volvo C30? They facelifted it a bit and it looks very nice and sporty now. I know that at the end of the day it is still a Volvo but a damn exciting one if you ask me. Prices are OK. Engines are OK. Safety is OK The only thing about buying one now is that there is an all electric version expected later on this year, which might sound tempting if you are doing city runs.

Have you thought about getting a nearly new/used polo diesel and keeping the rocco? Use the polo for whatever it is that is wracking the miles up and keep the rocco for fun at the weekends?

More expensive than switching but maybe more affordable than you think...

Currently plenty of 140 & 170 diesels on autotrader, private and dealers. Unless you're prepared to put up with bland or prepared to spend a fair bit more money then the only real alternative is a diesel roc.

I just got back from a passat CC and GTD drive.

GTD was nice but confirmed it was very overpriced.

Passat was really nice (surprisingly) but lacked punch. Turns out it was a 140 not a 170. 170 was also too pricey for what you get.

After some sums, decided to stick with the roc for another year. Cost to change is just too high. Wouldn't save enough in economy or have to go with something really dull.

Cars to be driven and enjoyed. To hell with it. You only live once.
