RCD510 Problems

Post by Gilez »

I have just spoken with VW UK Customer Services who have just confirmed that there are problems with the RCD510 radios, although they didnt specify what the problems are, and cars in production are being fitted wih upgraded RNS310 (lower number usually means lower model, but the RNS310 has sat nav) for free.

What is the problem?

We have had one problem with ours and it had to be replaced, that was that the CD changer jammed. :grumpy: :grumpy:

We have also noticed another one as well on both the original and the new one, that is that we get fading on Radio 1,2,3 and 4 and sometimes on Classic FM. It doesn't seem to relate to where we are in the country; so it looks like the RCD510.

interesting. picking my car up on Monday! I will be having a chat about the RCD510. I would not be happy with the RNS310. even if it did have sat nav. I would be wanting an upgrade to higher speck one. I wonder if they are having supply issues not technical issues?

I'd see the 310 as a downgrade too - the screen is TINY (and it's not even touchscreen)

Just spoke to the salesman who kept me informed on a weekly basis whilst mine was on order, He's says there’s no known fault for the RNS 510 but he did e-mail this which has no impact on the Scirocco.
Hope this helps.

Radio issue - free upgrade
10 Nov 09
1421-09

As a result of the current radio restrictions and to fill our weekly production in build week 49, it has been necessary to upgrade RCD 310 to the RNS 310 radio /navigation system. This will be a cost-free upgrade and to date has only impacted Golf and Passat Estate vehicles. These vehicles can be identified currently with the option description CD nav/radio with touchscreen – free upgrade.

As previously stated in Production Update (week 45) we are still awaiting clarification from the factory, but all current indications are that the radio restriction will impact us for the next four to five weeks. We will continue to update you and produce regular updates (weekly) of vehicles impacted by this radio issue.

RNS 310 satellite navigation
The RNS 310 unit is a CD-based satellite navigation system with integrated radio and MP3-compatible CD player. It has touch-screen operation on a five-inch colour screen, SD card reader, and aux-in slot for connection to external multimedia devices.

This issue is rather interesting. (but not for the poor buggers who getting a downgrade to the RDC310)

I was driving my car into work today and I noticed a brief fade in volume whilst listening to Radio 4. This happened quite a few times but I didn't give it much thought until I read this post.

I shall have to keep my ears pricked up for further volume fading glitches on mine. (If it persists I'll have to take it in under warranty).

I wonder if a known fault has developed with the current batch of RCD510 head units at the factory. They could be putting a stop to fitting it whilst they investigate the fault (or change supplier). This is pure guess work from me and not fact.

Anyone have any inside information to verify such gossip?

That sounds like the most likely explanation. Either that or the factory that makes them has got problems and can't supply them.
VW wouldn't want to halt production completely just for the sake of a radio.

Mind you my RCD510 unit in my early MY2010 Roc isn't without its occasional issues such as starting up and playing without any visual display

Last night when I got out of my car and locked it the RCD510 was still searching for a TP station (under the TIM setting). I went back out after 5 minutes and the radio was still on, the radio appeared to have frozen while doing a search.
Will have to keep an eye on it, don't want to get up one morning and find I have a flat battery.

I sincerely hope that I will not be receiving the RCD310 in my car on delivery. I'll be raising hell if I do. They should be upgrading to the RNS510 if there are problems with RCD, not downgrading people.

I was told the same story when I called VW Customer Services today - I believe they are going to give us an RSD310 as a replacement for the RCD510 - I will not be accepting this as although it has Satnav built in - in my eyes it is a step down - now if they want to upgrade it to an RSD510 that's a different story !! Lol.

I ordered on 15-Jul-09 and after 17 weeks without a confirmed build date - I will be looking for compensation from VW for the long wait. (A free first service would be a good starting point)

Before I forget - the next time any of you are on to VW Customer Services ask them to send you out an email stating that you will not be liable to pay the additional 2.5% VAT for delivery after 01-Jan-2010. I told them I wanted it in writing - they sent me an e-mail and I forwarded it on to my dealer !! TJ

I was quoted the same thing by my dealer, reading from his screen. He said this meant that the whole issue only affected Golfs and Passats, for some reason. He said he would get their admin people to call VW CS to find out more and would let me know - not holding my breath.
I've tried calling VW CS in the past and altho they were polite couldn't help with delivery estimate. Which number do people think works best?

Had the call from my dealer to tell me me also that the RCD510's are suffering from supply problems, and is causing delays to the Scirocco's. Not too sure about the delay to scirocco's however, but i must say I am not keen on the look of the RNS310 even if it does have sat-nav.

I phoned up VW customer services (my dealer is on holiday) and they said that there is no issue with the RCD 510 and that production is continuing as per normal. I have a confirmed build week 49, I just dont want it to slip anymore. I hope customer services are right, because if what im reading on this board is accurate then all of us with cars on order could be up for an even longer wait!

From combining the information between this thread and the one on Scirocconet, it looks like the Roc hasn't been affected by the problems with the RCD510. I'll believe it when I see it though!
