Launch Control & 0-60

Post by dchuraman »

i took my car out with a friend last night to our proving ground to try a few 0-60 runs. Firstly, does launch control actually have a use? I only ask because when i try it, all i get its lots of wheelspin before i set off, which is surely what true launch control is meant to avoid? I suspect its just a 'feature' thats not really that good, but i might just be using it wrong!

Secondly, the road was soaking wet, hence many of the wheel spins, but i managed to get a comfortable 0-60 of 7.1 measured with a G Meter. thats less then quoted by VW and that was in the wet. I reckon in good conditions, it will easily do 6.5, which corresponds to a number of magazine test.

I tried launch control for the first time today on a newly surfaced dry road - result was a huge wheel spin without much forward progress. Not impressed.

LC does work but because you need to turn traction control off then it will wheelspin, its 200Hp fwd car after all. What is needed is deft throttle control, not as easy as it sounds but when you do hook it up exactly then the thing catapults off the line like a scorched cat.
Taken delivery : Silver, DSG, NAV, Black Leather, Park Sensors, Winter pack.

Mods: Full Milltek, KW lowering springs,Wheel Spacers, Remapped to 258BHP, 405Nm

Gimmick I think. I had a demo car for 3 days, and didn't see any advantage to using the LC over just turning the ESP off and managing the throttle.

Isn't it 0-62 in 7.1 and 0-60 in 6.7?

Also some cars record how many times LC is used as someone on another forum used it a couple of times (not on a Scirocco) and had some clutch issues a few months on and the dealer refused to fix the issues due to the ECU showing he had used LC a couple of times. It was probably a difficult dealer and the car was manual so probably hurts the clutch more than DSG would in the same situation.

There is no LC in cars with manual gearbox.

i took the car out last night for another spin with the meter. Got a respectible 6.46 seconds 0-60, and 119 feet 60-0 braking distance. Not bad i think! still could be improved though

Be interesting to find out what the 0-62 time is when the engine has loosened up fully.

It works there was no way in hell I would have got the times I was producing at Santa Pod without it :) although since I'm running more power it could be interesting lol although I am now worried about the punishment the gearbox will be taking :)

have used launch control a good few times in my golf gt 170, its unreal on a dry tarmac surface! Spins the fu*k out of tyres if its any way wet...must be even worse with 200bhp!

CTRnutter - What sort of times were you getting before you modded it? Best i got was 0-60 in 6.4, but not on a track or anything ;)
