Corrado had a problem like this when new. What was happening was the "stops" inside the base of the arm at the hinge end (which prevent the arms contacting the windscreen when no blade unit is fitted) were holding the arm up in such a way that the full pressure by the arm could not be applied to the blade and it's carrier.
Solution was to grind down the stops with a dremel, so that when the arm and blade are against the windscreen but the arm was not on it's stops.

It was really pissing it down yesterday so had the chance to try the Champion wipers with actual rain and i have to say they were fine. There was very slight smearing in my line of vision but not enough to really distort anything. It was the kind of smearing you get if your window has been waxed. I might try something to clean it incase it is a waxy coating. I was doing speeds up to 85mph without any vision problems and they were extremely silent too. Fingers crossed it stays that way
Any chance someone can post a picture or describe how bad their smearing actually is?
In the rain, at best, mine's just a line the length of the wiper swipe (about few mm thick), at driver's eye level though. At worst, it's a about a cm thick at eye level. - On down-swipe. Though the up-swipe clears it.
Is this what everyone else is getting or am I just complaining about nothing?

Mine goes to a point at the top of the smear, is about 16" long, and 4" wide at the bottom- you can't ignore that!

Marcus - any chance of getting some part numbers from the warranty invoice to post here? My local dealership is playing dumb and saying there are no new wiper set-ups available at the moment, and my car was only in last week for a rattling bootlid.

I wish I could help but the job sheet just lists them as "modified" wiper blades and arms
apparently the new arms and blades are available to order but are now out of stock alledgedly my new parts were "borrowed" from a demo car down south somewhere.
The 9 alpha/digit part number for each arm (beginning with 1K8 955 *** *) are usually on the flat arm surface which faces the windscreen. Don't know if the blade carriers are marked but number will be the similar, probably 1K8 955 *** * as well..

How can VW create such great and complex engines and electronic systems in their cars, but fit shite wipers?
How hard can it be to make a wiper that doesn't smear? These things have been on cars since the 1920's.

I think it's down to the switch to "aero" wipers - these were always a bad buy for a replacement, and they're a bad choice on a new car.
It could also be that VW fit these wiper arms all over the VAG range, with the same spring tension on all cars regardless of blade length or the rake/curvature of the windscreen they'll be sitting against?
It could just be that VW don't care whether they work or not because they expect global warming to make rain and therefore wipers redundant in Europe?
Seems the advice with wiping the windscreen with vinegar etc is a way at pushing the blame onto drivers for washing their cars with the shampoo/wax combo, which leaves a wax residue on the windscreen. This is obviously crap - shampoo/wax wash has been with us for years and the majority of car owners wash their car in this way (not talking about those detailing nuts who spend 6 hours every Saturday cleaning their car with 12 different microfibre cloths, who'd rather cut off their right arm than wash and wax their car with anything that cost less than £50 a tub, and has a Carnuba wax purity of less than 99.9999999999999997%).
All automated car washes also operate in this way, so a bit of a thin coat of wax on the windscreen shouldn't cause the smears everyone is experiencing here.

I had mine changed but they were not modified. My screen used to have a smear then i clayed the windscreen with glass cleaner and ist been perfect since.
Does anyone have a picture of the wipers that are causing problems?
My car was built wk 28 and does not have 'aero' arms (I think; I'll pop out and check later) and I've not yet experienced the smearing that everyone has been talking about. I'm just wondering if VW have now changed the wipers 'on the quiet'
edit: Just checked and there are no foils on my wipers
My dealer keeps saying that VW are aware of this problem and are 'redesigning' the wiper arms and that they are still waiting to hear back from VW ( major fob off I fear!). Phoned VW customer care who seemed to know nothing about any wiper problems with the Scirocco, their technical department don't know of any such development going on.....will be paying a personal visit to my dealers very soon!!! Have had new set of blades from dealer months ago but the smearing is no better, about a 4" arc smear on the downstroke from top to bottom directly in my field of vision, same on the passengers side but not as wide maybe 3". Dealers & VW are saying that I shouldn't take anything from these forums when I mentioned that there seems to be the same problems with many Sciroccos.
See this thread guys http://www.sciroccocentral.co.uk/forum/ ... f=2&t=2728" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The (supposedly modified) Jetta wipers I spoke about are still working well for me and clear my screen better than ever.
Same goes for a couple of other Roc owners who have had them fitted although I think Evil Derboy who also had the "modified" wiper re-fitting is now experiencing the windscreen smear again.
