Troublesome wipers finally fixed!!

Post by kasman21 »

Hi Guys

I know many of us had had problems with their wipers and finally after 8 weeks, VW have sorted them!! After many reports going to and from VW Germany. They sent over some modified wipers and wiper arms and bingo!! problem solved!! no more smearing.

If anyone is still experiencing problems I will get the part numbers for you, as I said it was VW in germany that fianlly came good!!

cheers

Yes please do.
I contacted VW Technical at Milton Keynes this morning to try and obtain the part no. or info on these modified wipers.
I got through to Customer Services but again they would not let me go any further or talk to anyone in the technical dept. After going off to investigate they told me that they had no knowledge of any problem with Scirocco wipers or of any modified wipers.
After explaining to them about this site and other members wiper problems the only advice they could give me, and I kid you not, was to give my windscreen a wipe with vinegar and to add some to my screen wash :rage:

I'm surprised they did not also tell you to rub half a raw potato on it when it was going to be frosty.

Please post the part number so I don't have to explain everything to the dealer. Unless someone already talked to service in Twickenham and they know the issue.

The parts department here haven't seen anything on VW Technical or in the electronic catalogue so hopefully the part #s will help them.

For reference the original part #s are:
drivers side blade: 1K8955426C
drivers side arm: 1K8955410A

Just back from dealers with my third set of wipers now fitted.
VW Technical did acknowledge a problem and told my dealer to take wipers off of a Jetta and fit them to my car.
I don't know why a Jetta as I thought that they used the same wipers but to the best of my memory they do look slightly different to the old ones.
My dealer says that VW haven't actually modified the wipers but are telling dealers to use these Jetta ones if problems arise.
Strangely though my F.O.C. invoice does say "modified" wipers have been fitted but no part number has been quoted on there. All very weird.
Anyway, I tested the wipers with a screen wash and so far there is no smear. However the real test will come when it rains.
I'll give you an update when they have been tested further. Shouldn't have too long to wait for the next shower in good old Blighty.

Update to the above.
The new set of wipers seem to have done the trick with no smearing at all (so far) and I used them quite a bit yesterday.
I say "so far" because the first two sets deteriorated over time but my first impressions are that the new wipers are gripping the screen much more firmly all over.
Fingers crossed that this is a proper fix.
If it isn't I think I'd consider breaking the windscreen myself and making them start from scratch.

Nickp, seeing as you're the only one who seems to have luck with the wipers, can you keep us posted after a bit more time, and maybe it's changed after the huge storm today with so much rain...
Mine actually stopped smearing for a while during the really heavy rain, but is back again.

I'm holding off any dealer visits until you guinea pigs have been through all the vw wiper combinations!

I mentioned ages ago that my Jetta wipers are the same fitting as a 'Rocs, and i can assure you they do not smear! Try wiperblades.co.uk - they delivered inside 2 days and they are very good

Yes will do jc. It's still early days but they were still working well yesterday.

Blackroc do you think the Jetta wipers look slightly different to the originals?
It seems to me that the passenger side wiper is slightly more curved than the old one so when they are in the off position it sits with the end pointing upwards slightly whereas the drivers side rests in a more horizontal position.
It could be a total figment of my imagination but as the old wipers have gone I've got nothing to compare it too.
It doesn't bother me if they are sitting differently to the old ones as long as they continue to keep my screen clear but am curious if I'm imagining it or not.

nockp - Im not 100% sure what the main difference between a 'Rocs wipers and a Jettas wipers are, they just work as they should! The quality of the rubber seems better but other than that I dont know. I stumbled on this by accident as I dont have my 'Roc any more :( I traded mine in for a '57 plate Jetta (I am doing tons of miles) and needed new wipers almost straight away. I popped to Halfords first and whilst thumbing through the catalogue they have, noticed that when you get to the Scirocco page, it says *see Jetta* next to it! I thought that a bit odd so came home and went on the wiperblades.co.uk site and noticed again that the part numbers were the same as each other. The arm attachments are the same so seems a bit odd that VW have had this problem at all as surely they should just have used Jetta wipers from the start? :?

I've had the same problem with smearing wipers where the 2 blades overlap. Cured very quickly with 2 new blades from wiperblades.co.uk (their own make), £21.55 delivered. Part numbers are WB-6-19 (£8.40) and WB-6-24 £9.80). Delivered within 48 hours, fitted in less than 10 minutes. Perfect! Hope this helps if you still have the problem.

Just ordered some for the driver side only so fingers crossed. All the rain recently has pushed me to do something quick. It really is pretty dangerous with a big smear on the windscreen and I'm surprised VW haven't fixed it yet!
