Dynaudio - Sunday Times Review

Post by Alfie »

The Sunday Times supplement 'Ingear' on the 2nd August 2009 included a review on in built car sound systems, which included the Scirocco Dynaudio system. It got a very creditable 4 stars out of 5, with the following review:

Mr Practical: Volkswagen Scirrocco GT
Good sound needn't cost you an arm and a leg. Volkswagen offers the option to upgrade to a beefier amp and speaker package from Dynaudio, the Danish audio company, on several cars - including the Golf, Passat and Phaeton. Prospective buyers need to check carefully, though, as all specifications and prices vary widely. On the Scirocco GT, a modest outlay of £390 buys you a Dynaudio package that includes eight door mounted speakers. Spend £1,585 on the full set up and you will get a wealth of music playback options such as proper iPod connection, a 30GB hard drive and a SD merory card slot. You also get an impressive 16.5cm touchscreen sat nav that can play DVD's while the car is stationary. The Dynaudio system sounds eminently capable yet with no subwoofer it may be a little too lean at the low end for some tastes.
Audio vedict: 4 stars (out of a possible 5) - Fine perormer despite modest bass.

The system was only beaten by the Bentley Continental and the Jaguar XFR which both got 5 stars.alfie

This is why I feel I may have to invest in a modest sub to compliment the rest of the sound. I won't know until i get the car but hopefully it will be good enough.

Thanks for the post.

Personally I think anyone wanting more bass won't be happy till their kidneys resonate to the beat!

Dynaudio doesn't accentuate the bass but I've never heard a more defined low end in a car. Admittedly I've never owned a Bentley Continental or Jag XFR though

Must agree with their statement that it needs more bass. A subwoofer would add to the sound. I used to have a subwoofer in my old car and what a difference it made to the sound. The subwoofer adds to the overall depth of any music from Classical to rock to dance whatever your cup of tea. I am thinking more and more about fitting a sub again. Miss the bass.

Not sure I want resonating kidneys though

There will be NO subwoofer in my car.. :shake: To much boy racer for me..

Not to offend anyone or beeing prejudiced, but you guys that wants more bass for the dynaudio setup, do you have an intrest in music and sound, plays mp3:s that are at least 192kbs and complains out of greater experience ? Or are you one of those guys cruising around, listening at level 68, and got the dynaudio mainly to have a better and clearer sound at high volumes? :? :) Again I'm sorry, but I do wonder!

I listen to a pretty wide range of music also including jazz, which only can by played in a good sound system. My only experince of car sound systems is an audi a6:s bose setup whichI must say was the best I've heard in a car. Yet with that typical bose "hocus pocus sound" making it sound a little artificially.. From what I read and understand, dynaudio haven't got criticism for that.

Really hope I will enjoy this expensive extra just as it is! :)

Matter of preference.

Would you be able to use a sub with Dynaudio anyway?

I doubt it has the pre-outs for it.

I don't listen to my music at high volume really. But I do miss the depth that the subwoofer provides. I am really into my music. Mostly hard rock, metal but I do listen to some classical music also. Once you have heard a good balanced system with a subwoofer its difficult to go back to a system without it. Its almost as if there is a component of the music missing.

I certainly don't want it to broadcast mindless dance music to the masses !

Waiting on here to see what others do first though. Possibly will install one of those active under seat subwoofers but I have yet to hear one in the flesh.

hi guys, I am just configuring options on my Scirocco, can any of you advise what the standard speakers are like without the Dynaudio upgrade as it will save be about £17 per month, although I do love my music loud , I am not too concerned about the sub woofer side of things. thanks

Hi mort

i've only got the standard speakers & they're fine to me, i'm not the kind of person to have top spec/branded speakers/systems though. having now heard the dynaudio to compare it was perhaps slightly crisper but the standard spearkers aren't blurry or poor quality.
there is always the option of retrofitting something after you get the car

How is fitting a subwoofer, "Boy Racer"

A sub woofer is perfect way to get better performance out of your speaker as it takes the lower frequencies away from the mids and tweeters in the doors allowing them to do a better job with the rest of the frequencies. It doesn't matter where the bass comes from too as it's generally mono. A small 10" sub and amp neatly tucked away in your boot is all you need for this, plus if you're really interested in audio, you'll have sound deadened to compliment any audio upgrade, thus minimising the amount of sound lost externally.

And yes, I have an interest in music, I don't play mp3s unless I have too and even then I won't buy anything digitally under 320kbps.

I was very impressed by the standard speakers and sound system in the Scirocco on my test drive. I have Dynaudio in my car now but that's because the 'Roc I bought already had it fitted.

Horses for courses.

I'm changing everything in mine, I want integrated Bluetooth, DVD playback and USB connectivity, but also want to run my own amps and woofer. I like the flexibility it gives you, plus it allows the speakers to run the frequencies they're designed to cope with, not everything. I don't drive everywhere with music at level 68, but I like to get the full range of frequencies at higher level SQ. The trouble with a lot of sound systems is you could be getting something quite low end or middle of the road, but no direct comparison available you just assume it's the best because of the price tag associated with it, i.e I spent £600 on the BOSE upgrade in my A3, it was awful cheap crap, something you realise when you start taking it all apart.

Well said, I totally agree. Dynaudio is perfect for the price you pay in the UK.

i'd still be interested to hear it.. I had specced it on my car but then took it off..

I'm usually quite picky normally and have spent a fair bit on the hifi setup in my house. however my philosophy with these things is despite what anyone else says only pay for what you can see or hear.. (i.e yes it might be better and someone can confirm that but if you personally can't tell the difference don't spend money)

To get back to the point as they didn't have one I could demo I didn't bother but I have heard loads of good things..

But to fair not regretted it yet, when you've got road noise and the engine to compete with the standard setup seems fine..

Personally, I wouldn't bother with the Dynaudio. I speak from experience as I have bothered and I don't think it's up to much.

Sure it's better than the standard set up and, at £400ish, it's good value for money.

But, if it's exceptional sound quality your after, save the money and put it towards an aftermarket install by a car audio specialist.

That's not usually an issue with the professional audio installers, all the guys I've used in the past have been fantastic.

Plus, they can usually get all the stray nuts, bolts & screws out that VW left behind!
