Admiral insurance grrrrr

Post by Kev »

Last night I got my insurance renewal from Admiral. £520. Bit high but not overly so.

Out of curiosity I went to their web site and did an online quote.
£295! For the same policy!

So much for customer loyalty hey. You can cancel your policy and take out a completely new identical one (which presumably involves more paperwork and admin time) and save nearly half the price :grumpy:

Then today I went on to confused.com and got the same policy again but for £266! And with less excess!

That's probably enough exclamation marks for now :)
I'll be on the phone to them when I get home to find out why they're trying to fleece me out of over 200 quid.

Direct Line are exactly the same. Each year without fail now I get an online quote as soon as I receive my renewal. Then I take out the policy on line and cancel my paper policy. The same applies to their house insurance.
I hate Direct Line with a passion but I just can't find anyone that can undercut them.

i once had this with a renewal from Norwich Union so rang them up to ask why :D the poor sod i spoke to in the indian call centre clearly didn't have a clue, wouldn't put me onto someone more senior who could answer my question & in the end cut me off to shut me up, they didn't get my business & so far haven't done since (that was 5/6 years ago) talk about pissing on your own doorstep!

My thoughts exactly when I did the quote last night.
If they want my business, don't blatantly rip me off in front of my own eyes. And to the tune of over £200 as well. I might not have bothered if it was £20.

Kev,

Try getting a quote from Elephant too - they are the same company and I usually find I end up playing the 2 off against each other each year and getting a considerable discount from my renewal quote.

They claimed it was a mistake.
Bit of haggling and moaning and they got it down to £337 with a hire car and personal injury cover thrown in.
So I increased the mileage on my policy and went up 4 insurance groups moving to the scirocco but somehow my premium has dropped £50!
Go figure :) Maybe they've been ripping me off for years but only adding a tenner or so each time.

Avoid Elephant like the plague - they were total bandits when I was with them.

My lawfully parked, unattended car (a 2 week old Golf GT Sport 170 TDI) was clipped by a bus, which caused £6000 worth of damage. As there was not a hint of blame on my part, the bus company paid up for everything. So I lost no no claims, didn't have to pay an excess up front (although the useless legal cover tried to get me to pay an excess to claim back later), and it didn't cost Elephant a panny. I got my car back and literally 2 weeks later I got my renewal through. My premium had been £430 for the year, the renewal was for £850. Even though the case was settled as a non-fault claim, the exrta risk of me getting hit by a third party had caused my premium to double - how?

If they can double a premium for a no-fault claim which was fully paid for by the 3rd party, how much do they hike it if it is your fault?

You only find out how good your insurance is when you need to claim, but for me, Elephant gets a massive thumbs down.

I'm currently with esure, as they dont penalise you for a fully paid up non fault claim (some do, if you get an online quote with and without a non fault claim and see a difference in the price).

There's lots of factors in insurance, there's no one cheap company. Postcode, no claims and convictions (not me!) can be weighted so many different ways by different companies.

I'm 33, living in a low crime risk area of a small tyneside town near Newcastle, with full no claims (protected) and i'm paying £450 a year. If I was living at my uncle's house in Hartlepool, in a much higher crime risk area, it would be £90 cheaper - not sure how that works!

I've tried more than before and they got to within a few quid of Direct Line. I almost switched but I would have lost the discounts I get for insuring the wifes car and the house etc...

You'll find that most insurance companies do this. The fact is that you will be considered a higher risk to insure. I'm not being inflammatory in any way, but an actuary will consider that you parked your car in a place where a bus could hit it. The fact that it was legally parked is irrelevent to them. You are considered more of a risk because, in their eyes, you put your car in harms way. They then reflect this in your next policy renewal. Although the collision was not your fault in any way, you are now considered a higher risk because of it. It is one of the reasons why you are asked if you have been involved in a collision of any sort in the last five years.
