I have my 16 plate scirocco booked in at VW next week due to an air bag error message coming up on the dash.
I did a tight turn and sounded like something popped in the steering wheel (wires, unsure really). Ever since then it's been struggling to start and coming up with lots of lights on the dash that then go away.
Had a diagnostics and no codes came up.
Has anyone else had these sorts of issues?
Anyone able to identify this issue?

Re: Anyone able to identify this issue?
It could be the clock spring, I'm not a mechanic but as far as I'm aware the clock spring keeps wires for electronic controls on the steering wheel in constant tension (including wiring/cables for the airbag) . I had a similar issue recently but it was an electrical fault not mechanical, it sounds like something has snapped/broken inside the steering wheel/column which would be flagging the airbag warning light.

VW have said it's the slip ring. Quoted £700.

Not sure if the terms slip ring/clock spring are used interchangeably, but from the quote and the issue you described it sounds similar to what I had.
As far as I'm aware there's no way around that cost unless you know what you're doing and can fix it yourself, I was charged a lot for labour costs as they needed to take the steering column apart to get to it.

Yes clockspring/squib is the same item, i retrofit cruise control for £250 fully fitted and coded, and that includes a clockspring, stalks, fitting and coding. so miles cheaper and cruise control .deaconm wrote: ↑Fri Mar 14, 2025 2:26 pmNot sure if the terms slip ring/clock spring are used interchangeably, but from the quote and the issue you described it sounds similar to what I had.
