Coolant leak (another topic on…)

Post by dimexi »

Morning roccers,
Been a while since my last post, but hoping for some help.

My coolant light came on yesterday after a short drive (no real pre-warning like stains on floor that I noticed). As my destination wasn’t far, I nursed my car there while keeping an eye on the temp gauge, which didn’t go beyond the customary 90degs.
I topped it up with some water and G13 to just under the max level. Got home, no problems.
Left home again an hour later, but light came on 5 mins into my drive. Parked my car up and checked, I could see a puddle on the underside tray and the tank looked empty again.
I returned to the car about 8 hours later to look at the expansion tank, there was coolant in and it was above the min line!! Turned the engine on and the coolant light returned.

So, I know I have a leak and hope to sort it. But I am surprised that when the engine is cold, most of the coolant is in the tank! Yes, I know it is an ‘expansion tank’ and some coolant would reappear, but I expected the level in there to be below the min line, since the coolant warning keeps coming on.
Can anyone explain this please? Thank you.
